New Regulator/Rectifier
Wanted to post about Honda's (fairly) new regulator/rectifier designed for permanent magnet alternators (the same type alternator used used in all 4 cyl gold wings).
This is a true series regulator, it does not work by shunting current like all their previous models. Always hated the idea of burning 300+ watts inside the case just to hold the voltage down, this thing fixes that and also increases idle charging voltage.
It is made by Shindengen in Japan, the same supplier Honda has used since the '70s. The technology replaces SCRs and analog circuits with power MOSFETs controlled by a built-in microprocessor.
I have installed one on my '81 GL1100, and it has worked really well for about 200 miles now. Battery voltage went from 12.8v to 14.2v (at 1000 rpm idle, lights on, fan off) with no other changes.
These regulators first appeared around 2004 on CBR1000RR bikes. Unfortunately, there were many stator failures shortly after and Honda issued a major recall, although the cause was supposedly defective stators and rotor magnets rather than the regulator. The same regulator has been in regular use since the recall with no problems, so basically it has passed the test of time (for 4 years anyway). I'm mainly using it because my efi conversion added 6 amps to the old GL1100's energy budget, and needed something to offset it. Used a 18w H4 headlight bulb from a Chinese moped for awhile, but this solution is much better.
For those who want to try one of these regulators, they are avail in two sizes, 30 amp and 50 amp. I used the 30 amp version mainly because it has wire leads and found it cheap on ebay ($45 w/shipping). This version was used on the 04-07 CBR1000RR and CBR600RR and has Shindengen part number FH008EB - the 'F' designates it is an FET model - the Shunt/SCR ones have an 'S' prefix. Here is a pic of it mounted on the '81: Checking the Internet, found that this regulator has been a popular conversion with several sport bike brands (Ducati, Triumph, etc), so it wasn't really that risky to try it on the GL. Haven't seen it mentioned on a GoldWing forum before so thought I'd bring it up..

Re: New Regulator/Rectifier
To heck with the regulator talk..... what about the EFI??
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Thanks for that information, Bob. I snagged it and padded our Crossover list with it.

Re: New Regulator/Rectifier
For the neophytes out here, can you let us know how the wiring colors compare to the old GL unit so we can figure out which wires go where?
Since we have the wiring diagram for our GL bikes, if we had the wiring for the CBR then maybe we would be all set?

Great, we have an alternative to this archaic design!Fred Camper wrote:For the neophytes out here, can you let us know how the wiring colors compare to the old GL unit so we can figure out which wires go where?

I Googled this http://www.triumphrat.net/speed-triple- ... grade.html
Hookup is very simple. 3 yellow wires in, pos and neg out!

Re: New Regulator/Rectifier
Great idea, I'm no wiz but need some understanding, I find this conversion interesting!! With the old OEM and constantly burning off the unused voltage and always so freakin Hot,...this will up the voltage with a more constant charge without any waste??? Just a better controled voltage burn without the waste like the OEM??? Will this heat up as well?? I just hate anything electrial, just know enough to get into trouble !! Just learning !!! Bob

Re: New Regulator/Rectifier
call me silly but I really get nervous with used electrical parts sooooooo ...........................
brand new Honda one with pig tails - $121.67 (msrp $163)
http://www.mrcycles.com/fiche_section_d ... &fveh=3027
brand new Yamaha one with no pig tails (my choice looks cleaner) - $135.97 (msrp $209)
http://www.mrcycles.com/fiche_section_d ... &fveh=6855
The Yamaha one matches the OEM part number in this post too .
http://www.triumphrat.net/speed-triple- ... grade.html
This looks like a killer upgrade to me. I am seriouslly thinking to just do this upgrade and forget about putting in the Electrosport
hi output stator I bought.

Re: New Regulator/Rectifier
Shamless copy planned here. I would rather have the extra amps for front end lamps to better be seen. Seems like the right answer to me to get the power this way. Great link to the triumph site.

Re: New Regulator/Rectifier
I scored a Shindengen FH008BA from a 2005 CBR600RR from ebay for an okay price. It is a 4 wire output unit, but per the Honda schematic they did that just to split the current in the connector. The two positives and two negative wires join together before they get to the ground and battery.

Re: New Regulator/Rectifier
Anybody with electrical expertise try to use other regulator/rectifiers from other makes that are cheaper. One similar to the FH008EB, that's a series regulator and uses MOSFETs?
