Rectifier Regulator Replacement FH 0012aa

#1

Post by kb0ou »

This is a project to replace the Rectifier and Regulator in the 12 volt charging system on my 79 Goldwing.
The main reason to change it is to remove the Regulator to provide more room for Electronic Fuel Injection Items under the Left side of the Faux Gas Tank. I will be mounting my computer (MicroSquirt) about where the Regulator used to be.

Also the new R/R is more efficient than the old Honda system due to more efficient diodes that are available today that were not around back in 1979.
Here is a link to my EFI project write up here on NGW...........

This is the kit I ordered from Ebay...... url .............

An eBay address would be good, please.

This is where the Regulator used to be.....
The future home of a MicroSquirt EFI computer,,, part of the reason I am doing this job,, make more room for Electronics.....

Image

Note; The black wire on the Regulator plug is switched 12 volts from the Ignition Switch, it will be useful in the future to hook up to the MicroSquirt computer...

Old Rectifier and Battery Box.....

Image

New Rectifier/Regulator mounted to Battery Box..........

Image

The Rectifier mount that is on the Left side of the Batt box was removed, trimmed of the mount for the ignition condensers and remounted but turned 90 degrees.
The bolt holes/nuts for the old rectifier lined up perfectly for the new one.
I did have to use some spacers on the original bolts as they were a little long,, spacers are large nuts.

Hey, it works............

Remounting Battery box with new R/R......................

Image

Image

Note; The Ebay kit comes with the plugs that plug into the R/R, they are pretty nice plugs, one for the Stator wires (3 Yellow) and one plug for hooking up to the Battery, with 30 amp fuse.

Instructions are good, make sure you solder all connections good.

I did cap the two red wires to the Left that used to go from the Rectifier to the Battery by way of the Starter Relay. They are still connected on the Relay side, I put some butt connectors on the wires. Who knows I might use them for something sometime??
And I did not want them to go to ground and do some arcing and sparking.
The old yellow wires hanging and green wires are not hot. The greens are Ground, I may tie them to a good ground if neccessary.

So, I call this a success, I have more room for my EFI project and a charging system that works better

A Win/Win situation!!!!

It's nice not to shunt 300 W to the case all the time for no particular good reason. Yay for PWM of MOSFETS.

I am at the point in my rebuild to do this mod but I have a couple questions:

1) What should I do with the black wire that came of the regulator? Just cap it off?

2) I also have 2 red/white wires that went to the old rectifier, and the other end (one wire that ended up at the starter solinoid. So you just capped those off as well? Why connect the other end to the starter solinoid?

3) I have 3 to 4 green wires that went to the old rectifier. Should I connect all these to a ground or just cap them off?

4) As far as the in line fuse, this can be used instead of the old fuse setup?

Thanks if advance for clarifing
