I think the original designers of the wing wanted a machine that was stable at the speeds it was capable of. It was designed for the long haul, and at speed. scooting around town, from light to light, was the job of the "light weights". But the designers thought of that as well, and designed it with an extreme low center of gravity to off set the weight. Designers who were ahead of their time,.....and thought outside of the box. They thought, as do I, that a Goldwing is the exact right weight

At 6'4 and 260lbs, I can verify this. Although my buddies have said that, unlike some other bikes I have been on, I don't look ridiculously out of place on my Gl1000.
