I'm trying to finish a 1976 gl1000 basket case and ran into an over charging problem. Low voltage in the sense wire. In tracing down the problem I discovered a voltage drop in the ignition switch. I also discovered the switch supplied to me is a 6 pin and I should have a 5 pin. My question is can I install 5 pin repair kit in my housing that had the 6 pin originally ?
The 6 pin would work but the bike will run in any key position except "off". With the voltage drop iI know I'm needing a replacement but would rather go with the correct 5 pin kit if it will fit my housing. Anyone make this swap?
Looks like embo is the only repair kit available, from what I've read, seems a relay or two might help with the longivity of that make.

Re: Ignition switch woes
Update, I stumbled across the "ignition switch cleaning" by peteybug in the how-to section so dissembled my switch, it was a mess. After cleaning the bike is charging at 14.6 v at 3000 rpm. ( it had been charging at 15.6 or so)Definitely poor contact in the switch was the problem. I can ride without worrying now, but I still would like to install the correct switch. Many thanks to NGW for all the info available here.

Re: Ignition switch woes
gradually getting my 76 finished. I still lack a headlight bucket and front turn signals but they are in the mail. A PO painted the side covers black but I found a spray can of Krylon that is close to matching, good enough for me anyway. I was also short a shelter lock but found a cabinet lock that was fairly easy to install. Put about a hundred miles on it in the last few days and am pleased. This was a basket case and it's been a learning experience that I've enjoyed.
