I'm back!

About 2 years ago I bought a beater of a 78 GL1000 in a sad state of repair. The previous owner had let her sit for several years after the rear tire blew out while rounding a corner and scared him away from riding. I was fortunate enough to find you guys and your wealth of knowledge and was able to rehabilitate her to a decent running condition, and then cheaply cafe'd it with a set of clubmans. I rode it around like that for a little over a year, and then traded it for a boat. Something the whole family could enjoy. Never got the boat on the water, and eventually sold it, making me completely void of a project/toy.

Anyways, a few weeks ago I saw her pop up on Craigslist while browsing, and decided I needed her back. The Boss Lady was skeptical and hesitant, as we're getting married in October and trying to cover all the ridiculous costs associated with that business. I was eventually able to convince her that we could make it work, and we'd both be happier in the long run. It was, after all, considerably less expensive than the 2014 Street Glide I'd test ridden the week before and fallen in love with.

The guy I'd traded her off to was happy to see me getting her back, albeit in a state of disrepair again. He'd undone my cafe job, done a half-ass ugly paint job (worst I've seen, and I've done some pretty crappy ones myself), and just generally let things deteriorate. He'd knocked it over and busted out the glass in the speedo and replaced it with a mismatched one from a Yamaha of some variety. It didn't work anyway. Something with the speedometer pickup on the wheel. But it came with a whole set of Vetter fairings and bags he'd picked up off a guy who wouldn't sell him just the fairing. After riding it around for a few days, it turns out the plug on the back of the ignition switch doesn't stay attached like it should anymore, so it randomly wiggled loose and the bike would die mid-stride.

So I've spent the last few weeks cleaning things up a bit and getting them back to how I like them. Thank God I did a New2U kit shortly before I got rid of her. Put the clubmans back on and tacked on a couple of nuts to the lower triple tree for steering stops. I removed the gauges and built a bracket to hold just the speedo and oil and neutral idiot lights (also converted to LED's). When I did that, I removed the ignition switch completely and re-wired it to a couple of switches in the glove box (still semi-secure under a lock, plus no one will figure it out anyway). Big plans for her, but they'll happen slowly since adding the descriptor "Wedding" to anything automatically triples the price. Hooray for overtime!

Looking forward to hanging out with you guys again!
