79GL1000 "Spare Parts"

#1

Post by jhenriks »

Here are a few pics of a 79 gl1000 that I built to rip back and forth to work. Bought this bike as a 500.00 runner that needed a stator thinking that I could quickly fix it and flip it. Well that changed when I realized that the coolant was mixing with the oil. Turns out the water pump went bad. The weep hole plugged and forced the coolant into the motor. After fixing the water pump I decided that I might as well rebuild the carbs, throw on a new set of belts and start cutting and switching parts. A few parts were bought new but allot of the parts were just laying around the garage. The bike is a allot of fun to ride and gets a few looks.

The seat is off of a sportster. I bought it for a gl1100 bagger project that never happened. Seems to show a little more tank and gap then i like but the seating position isn't bad.

Do you know what year/model Sportster it came off of? I have a Harley Badlander seat on my '77 RatWing. It's off of an'04 Sportster with the 4.4 gal tank (I think). I believe it's supposed to be a low profile seat. Yours certainly looks to have more padding. I'm still getting some carb issues worked out, so I haven't ridden it very far, but it doesn't seem very comfortable.

I think that it is a stock seat off of a 2006 Sportster 1200. Not the softest seat, it doesn't have allot of padding.
