good advice here too.
getting rid of the flash will help oil drain back and will also help eleviate stress and protect from cracks if you decide to hammer on it occassionally after you get it rideable.

great progress rainstromrider, btw i am enjoying watching this build as you get closer to completion.

Great to see the progress Nate. Hope you get her started soon, so that the final issues can be discovered early.

Got the message on the heads boys! Cleanup and go, besides I have my hands full getting the rough cast outside smoothed. Did get the heads, and valve covers stripped last night. Valve covers have some nasty corrosion on them! Thought I would cleanup the valves on my lunch break today, but the crud on the exhaust might as well be ceramic! Makes sense it is baked on pretty hard. Took half an hour on 1 valve!

Been busy! Just a dry fit for a quick pic, but it helps keep me motivated!
Don't know what came over me, but I had to smooth the valve covers. One of them was really nasty. Took me a couple hours to get all the pitting sanded off.

Because of that, I did find online some VHT clearcoat. Only 7-8 bucks a can. Definitely going to clear it!

I used VHT white on my engine. It turned very yellow in 200 miles. I had to pull the engine again for another problem so I repainted with Duplicolor engine enamel. It still looks good after a year and 4700 miles.

Without the carbs on it that engine looks REALLY wide.

I've found duplicolor engine, but not clear? I'm not particular to any namebrand if anyone has a suggestion? And it does look quite wide on it's own!

Don't know if the photo was worth the attempted hernia, but I couldn't resist seeing it in the sunlight

Hoping to have the water tubes and cam pulleys done tonight. Probably won't have head gaskets and timing belts till next week, but I'll have everything finished and waiting.
Fred Camper wrote:Nothing like progress to keep motivation up. How is the wiring going, love the engine!
No wiring at all yet. Once the engine is back in, and before the carbs go back in I'll start on the wiring. All the electrical system is going on the back of the acrylic panel for the gauges. I'm going to ditch the tach to make room for the misc parts. They will all be semi-polished, or painted in copper.

Nice, and will look good in Da Moonlight too.

Are the carbs runners? Are the runners semi polished? Does...

Carbs would be front runners for the ugliest carbs ever right now, nasty pitting on the aluminum, the rubber boots are scarred by the p.o.'s liberal use of a wire wheel, every steel part is severely rusted, and all siliconed together! Not Good! But...I have a plan ;)

From everything I have seen in this thread, this can only turn out completely awesome.
