I like that side cover badge.

With so few lights you should not need a big ol' generator.

Post by Oldboy »

Well thoses badges are from...get this a GL100...yes a 100. I was ebaying one day and made a typo. I found these badges. It turns out in Thailand honda sold GL100 with the super deluxe name tag. The funny thing is they were actually 125 cc's.

Who won the race? Man, when you get them that clean you almost hate to ride them and watch everything slowly deteriorate. But I think I'll keep riding mine :-D.

Video proof

#21

Post by Oldboy »

I have video proof it ran 13.16 @ 99.xx mph. There might of been a bit more in it, but the track was covered in anti-freeze twice and clean up time dragged on too long. The Clutch was slipping pretty good during the last run (slowed to 13.26) and we were crossing the finish line just getting into 4th. I heard there was a 4:10 ratio final drive for a GL1000... stock is a 3:40. Can anybody verify this?

I recall Cyborg and Rodger discussing a lower ratio at one point. I think it was aftermarket for sidecar use, pretty rare now.

Your bike rocks. What spokes did you use for the front wheel. Did you use stock and cut them down or did you special order them? What was their length?

Wheels

#29

Post by Oldboy »

The front & rear rim are the same size 16" X 3". They are both Harley
Davidson. I originally bought 2 knock offs from ebay, but once I finished lacing the up and started to tru them, I realized that there was no way to make them straight. Thats when I bit the bullet and bought the Harley rims locally. The spokes are from Buchanan Spoke & Rim. They will make any spoke you need all you have to do is tell them rim & hub. 3 weeks later they're at your door. It was easy & simple.

Image

The rotors are GL1000, you have to use these because they are 6 bolt as compared to the GL1100 being 5 bolt. I had to play with spacers in order to get the wheel centred. Also you have to rework the caliper mounts, because the cl to cl of the rotor centers is about .125 wider.

Image

The fender is off a CB900 (noy sure of the year). I turn it around relocated the speedo cable guide and replated it. I didn't realize at the time that the fork mounts must be higher up on the 900 and therefore had to make an adapter to locate the fender at the right height. 2 pieces of stainless and stainless hardware.

The carbs....before

Image

& After.

Image

Well heres where I may get some flack.. I first clean my carbs on the outside with the finest grade glassbead we have at our shop. Of course I tape off all the opening and am extremely carefull. Then I dissmantle them and clean them extensively in solvent. This way I get a uniform finish on all the carbs. I polish the slider lids and bits and pieces get gold zinc plated even though they weren't originally. I put rebuild kits in all of them, and the only problem there was the pilot or low speed jet was pressed in these carbs (obviously 80 or 81 carbs) and they can be a real s.o.b. to get out. It took a while. I should have checked this before I started and gotten carbs off an 82 or 83. All & all they worked out well and perform great!
Theres a couple of pics up above . Glassbeading carbs is not recomended by me. But these carbs were a mess so I had nothing to loose. Its not my first time.
