Interesting comment about the rims. You said you could not true the knock-off rims. Did you buy Harley rims? The reason I ask is that I converted my rear wheel to a 16" rim. The rim, purchased from JP Cycles, was new and I checked it for true before I started. I had two problems, some of the rim's spoke holes did not line up at the proper angle so the spokes could pull straight to the hub. I slightly enlarged the spoke holes to compensate but used the small washer/shim from the old rim so I am not worried about pulling a spoke through the rim. Even so, some of the spokes have a curve in them instead of a nice straight pull. I used an inside outside pattern for the spoke pull from the hub. The second problem is a result of the first, I was only able to true the wheel to .030. I was not happy about this. It hasn't made any difference to the ride or handling and I keep a close check to make sure the spokes don't loosen with the miles.

I originally did another wheel using smaller diameter spokes and had all the spokes pulling from the inside of the hub. Better alignment but weaker wheel as some of the spokes broke after a time. Not Good!

Did you experience any of these problems with your rear wheel or did using the Harley wheel corrrect for the problems I experienced?

The knock off rims I got were off shore, although they laced up (holes were all aligned) there were more twist & dips in theses rims. I could tell on the first spin in truing that they would never be good, so I didn't even try. The Harley rims were used, 1 was 5 years old the other a brand new take off in 2008. They were both dot approved. On first spin of truing the difference was night and day to the cheap off shore rims. (They made good hose holders though).
I have also seen repro rims with misaligned holes. Never bought one though. As for your .030 truing, I'm told that is excellent. Its almost impossible to make them perfect, with these rims being welded and all. I'll bet the orginal GL1000 rims tru up nicer.
Hope this helps.........

Well its been a while...
Heres whats new.
Recieved my GEM unit from spokenipple and can confirm its a 4:00 to 1 ratio. 10 pinion teeth 40 ring gear teeth...simple math. Found some 1975 GL1000 cams and thier on thier way to me now. Also bought GL1000 trans gears and am still looking for a set of 1983 GL1100 trans gears. According to a chart I got from you guys (thank you very much) I plan too (if possible) use 1st gear ot of the 83 1100, its the deepest at 2.64, 2nd, 3rd and 4th out of the 75 1000 there ratios are the best of the bunch and 5th out of the 83 1100 as well. This ratio is actually the best for highway cruising, with the 4:00 final drive, I'll need it. Hers some pics and a little detail...

Engine disassembly...
Image
Notice the clean top on the left side...lots of oil getting past those rings.
This old girl smoked bad after a long sit..left side that is.
Image
She still had good sqeeze...all the way around.

Piston tell it all....oil, oil, oil.
Cheers...

What kind of Front master Cylinder are you using? I would like to get rid of my linked brakes and it looks like you are using 83 calipers with both of them activated by the front MS.

jilldwr....Got the plating done here in Toronto on a street called Fima Cresent.. but the guys gone now, go figure.

Andyb. 82 wings use a dual piston front caliper as well. 82's the pistons are all the same size. 83's calipers look identical but one side the pistons are smaller. you can still connect them to the front brake master cylinder. I don't know the bore size of an 83 master, but any master from 80 - 82 will work. Check the parts manual and see if 83 has the same size bore. You will need the coupler thats mounted behind the name tag of a naked wing to link the master to both calipers, as for the sound...next year for sure.

Morganfrmm. The motors apart, the block has been honed, I still have to order rings, bearings, primary chain and gaskets.
Cheers...

Thanks for the idea. Just checked tbe service manual. According to it, the piston diameter is the same for all GL1100 models. Excellent. Now, to sort out the rear. 83 had a larger piston to push more fluid.

A larger piston give less feel, you might not want to go larger than you have to. On lots of bikes you reduce the diameter of the master piston for better action.

hours and dollars

#44

Post by morganfrmn »

Would you tell us how many hours you have in the project

and if you would be so kind how many dollars. Since we are
all involved in this same endever.

I know dollars come in waves and if your doing pisitons right now then your shelling out a new set of dollars.

But how many hours did it take to get it looking and running like it does?

And how many dollars of just parts and hired labor did it cost... rough
dollars is fine...

I am sure if you have the engine apart now then there is another thousand to be spent....

That is what I thought, but thanks for confirming. I have messed with bicycle brakes for about 20 years and it taught me about leverage. But, it is sometimes counter-intuitive to me.
