Some of you may remember when Anakin tore apart the 81 then he just gave up. what to expect at 13. So I put the engine in and rear wheel on and front end together just so I could move it out of the way as an assembly. :IDTS: Like moving it really worked, so it still sits on the work table. Last year I got an 04 Yamaha 650 V Star minus the engine, tank and frame. The front end is together and complete and has been pushed around the shop for a while now. I have measured bearing surface diameter on the stem of both the GL and V Star an they are the same diameter, so I ground the weld off the GL and drilled the spring pin out of the V Star neck. After that I pressed them out leaving the lower bearing in place on the GL stem to use as a guide for how far to press the stem into the V Star lower tree. then I welded the bottom up like on a factory steering stem. With this design I can directly bolt this up to any GL1100. I am also working on the rear as well. Being the V Star was shaft drive I will be building a new adapter to mate the rear wheel up to the GL final drive. and swingarm.

If anyone ever does this swap I learned that the stem presses from top through the bottom on V Star. There is a small clip on the bottom of the stem in a grove and I snapped it off pressing it out.
C360_2015-01-17-13-44-43-838[1].jpg
The upper tree stem diameter was to small on the V Star so I need to go into town and get a brake hone to open it .040in to fit the GL stem.
C360_2015-01-17-13-43-36-436[1].jpg
I also have to cut the Steering Stops off the wing and weld on in the center of the neck since the V Star is built on the lower.

I don't know if they are all swappable. I literally bought a trash can full of 2004 650 parts a complete front end and rear wheel. I used the fuel pump on Silverback and a few other parts too. I was tinkering around one day and started measuring steering stem and found them to be the same lower diameter. The stem from the Vstar was about half inch to short so I figured I just swap the stem and it is like it was made for it. I cut the steering stops off but will have to build some new ones, it works for now the bottom fits so no grinding necessary.

Today I tried out 5 different style seats and 3 different tanks/shelters and came up with this being the best combo. I cleaned the dust off and got some in the beginning photos.lol These are not necessarily the parts I will be using but a basic design as to where I am going.

I'm guessing he means remove the stem from one triple tree lower and installing another/different one. This has been done for years.

Well I spent some time out in the garage cleaning and pulled the herd out to get a breath of fresh air. The 4 that run all got to spend a little time out of the barn. A couple need some tending to so lists were made. Today I spent some time over at sunnbobbs getting No Quarter out of the stalls and we rode to get some lunch, he was so excited to get back out on No Quarter.

When I came home I started doing some designing of the new rear flange adapter hub thing. I don't have the one from Yamaha and the local Bent Bike had nothing so I will be designing from scratch.
C360_2015-01-26-18-55-24-971.jpg
I got my drafting table ready and went to town to design a first prototype (I sound so technical). I sure am glad I took that semester of drafting in high school 30+ years ago.

Now I need to find someone that has a lathe I can borrow for a few hours. So as the night crept up on me I kept looking at things and yes for sure going to go with a monoshock set up. Why not it is from the same Vstar as the rest of the doner parts, hence the name Goldstar.

Hey Jim, can't wait to see what you come up with. Will it be a Honaha or a Yamada?

I was thinking more along the lines of a Yamahonda GLX1100 Goldstar. I need to buck up and start cutting. This one will take some time. I want to get the back mated then start working forward since I started on the front. I will work my way into the middle.
