77' GL1000 Build Thread
So this project has been a long time in development, i picked up this 77" GL1000 and a 81' GL1100 back in Feb of 2015. The plan was to get one running so i can park closer to my building at work.... Well that took on a life of its own, i went back and forth between doing some custom work or simply restoring the bike.
In the end i want a bike that suited me. So this is what came out of my wandering the internet for 2 years and finding what i liked and what i do not. Best i can say is that it is a cafe and streetfighter inspired Goldwing design. I was surprised how many great designs are out there but how few use a goldwing as the beginning. So this is my attempt to show the possibilities hidden within the Goldwing.
At this point i have aquired a lot of parts but the physical work has just started, i cut off the back frame last night (feb 5, 2017) so it is the official start of the project. I will try to keep updates regular as progress is made... Lots to do on this one.
If there is anyone in the NE Oklahoma area please reach out would like to meet some locals with similar interests.

Re: 77' GL1000 Build Thread
The final drive is marked 32/11 or 2.91 ratio, from what i can tell that is a bit of a change from the 3.4 of the stock final drive. My research shows there is a gear change i can make to get the ratio to 3.368 but will have to look at that more. For now this is a proof of design.

Very aggressive. A great start with many unknowns. Keep us in the loop.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: 77' GL1000 Build Thread
The rear end is from a 2004 BMW R1150R, this will include Rear wheel, Brake system (Rotor, Caliper, Master) Swing arm, Final Drive and drive shaft. Of course i am going to be cutting up the BMW drive shaft to make one that work with Goldwing engine. I have been thinking about changing the U-joint to a serviceable unit during this process, we will see...
Here are some additional pictures of the fitting of the swing arm, keep in mind that the BMW swing arm is quite a bit thinner than the stock goldwing swing arm. It is simply held in place with the goldwing swing arm bolts since the taper can grab the bearing on the r1150 swing arm. These photos were taken before i cut the rear frame off to make sure i could make this conversion work. After verifying that i have wheel alignment i moved forward.

Re: 77' GL1000 Build Thread
Since i have not been able to spend a lot of time in the garage working on the bike i have been attempting to wrap my head around a complete rewire of the bike. At this point i am using the motogadget M-unit v2 as the brains, i am moving to a single digital gauge. Some other upgrades electrically i am exploring is a new slim radiator fan, the C5 ignition system along with new headlight and signals. Finally since i have to fabricate a new fuel tank i have to figure out a fuel level sensor that works with the gauge.
Here are links to what i am using
M-unit - these guys have a great video on this unit if you are interested.

Universal Guage

C5 Ignition - seems to be quite popular with those that have them

More to come on this subject as the plan solidify

Re: 77' GL1000 Build Thread
Was able to spend some time in the garage this weekend here are some clean mock up shoots, not the front end i originally planned on but may end up with it for times sake.
Front end is from a 97' CBR900rr, for final fit it will require a longer yoke to be manufactured. The original plan was a 2001 CBR929rr front end, this year had inverted forks but still requires a longer yoke to be made. Luckily the yokes are press in so they are easy to change out once a new one is made.
Removed the center stand due to how the BMW rear end requires a landing spot for the para-lever arm, that is what the green strap is holding in place. Planning on replacing the center stand with "simple" hydraulic stand hidden in the rear frame member.
By chance does anyone know of a good source for DOM tube in the Tulsa, OK area?

Looks like your prostate is going to give you problems. Or will the shock tilt forward enough to give a decent seat height?

Re: 77' GL1000 Build Thread
Funny you should mention the shock mount, i have been playing with its angle a lot, that is the main reason i started taking the pictures.
The first picture shows roughly where it will be, it should move slightly forward lowering its position. There should be a inch or three before the bottom of the seat from what i can tell at this point. Once i start to fabricate the rear seat frame i will be able to finalize the placement.
The other consideration is that the shock currently has no pre-load on it so that will also have to be taken into account when i make up the final shock mount.
Does look odd just sitting up there though...
