Gord, can you put the date of the ride in the title thread? Makes it easy to reference. I can't find the post with the dates!

Steve (OldwingGuy) and I (Sparkyrasmus - Stephen) are seriously thinking about coming too. Still a bit far out on the calendar to know.
Goldwings don't accelerate, they gain inertia.

Alarmdoc - Good to meet you. I live in Gananoque and work on the Hill in Ottawa. If you are anywhere near downtown during the day we should get together and I'll buy you a government lunch :-D

Meanwhile I am going to start a daily post for everyone thinking of coming to the run to start getting you acquainted with the area.

Thousand Islands Moment - First in the Series:

While documenting an excursion to the Thousand Islands in the early 1840’s, Charles Dickens noted “The beauty of this noble stream at almost any point, but especially in the commencement of this journey, when it winds it way among the Thousand Islands, can hardly be imagined. The number and constant successions of these islands, all green and richly wooded; their fluctuating size, their infinite variety of shapes; and the numberless combinations of beautiful forms which trees growing on them present: all forms a picture fraught with uncommon interest and pleasure.” (American Notes)

Translation - It's frickin pretty here. Of course, he was here in the summer.

If I'm not babysitting 2 of our grandchildren while my wife is off teaching summer school in the mornings, maybe I'll make a day trip across the Border on my trike to meet up with y'all for a 1000 Islands visit, too?

Thousand Islands Moment – Second of a Series

Of course Charles Dickens could only view the islands from the deck of a primitive steamship, one of several that plied the waters of the Thousand Islands in the 1800s.

Today, we have the advantage of several points of view; river, road, and sky.

You can enjoy the breathtaking view from the 1000 Islands Tower and see the 1000 Islands and the Upper St. Lawrence River.

The 1000 Islands Tower is a unique tourist attraction, the only one of its kind in the 1000 Islands.

Running continuously, the interior elevator takes only 40 seconds to reach the first of three observation decks which provide visitors with a spectacular photographic opportunity as they enjoy the panoramic view of the 1000 Islands and St Lawrence River stretched out 130 metres or 400 feet below.

A Tour Guide is always available at the first level to explain the area and answer questions.

The tower is only open spring, summer and fall, and up until recently, some tour guides and locals explained to gullible tourists that the steps on the sides were actually threads and the tower was screwed back into the ground in the winter. In fact, some locals will still tell you that.

The tower is located on Hill Island on the Canadian side of the border. You have to cross the Canadian span of the bridge to get there and there is a minimal cost for this.

For more information and some spectacular photos from the top visit the web site.

http://1000islandstower.com

And if this isn’t high enough for you, you can always go to Gananoque and book a helicopter flight over the islands. It is best to call ahead to make reservations.

Thousand Islands Moment - Third in a Series

There are 1,865 islands within the 1,000 Islands. They were formed 12,000 years ago, toward the end of the last ice age as the ice retreated from the area.

The islands lie between Kingston in the west and Brockville in the east, a distance of 55 miles.

In numerical terms, two-thirds of the islands are Canadian but the total area of the islands is split evenly between the US and Canada. No island is split by the border although you can almost reach across the border at the International Rift between Hill Island and Wellesley Island where there is just barely enough room and water depth for a small boat to pass through most of the year.

The border was formalized in 1793.

The region was called “The Garden of the Great Spirit” by the Natives. The early European explorers – the French – named it “les Milles Isles” which translated means, the Thousand Islands.

Geologically the Thousand Islands form “stepping stones” across the river joining the Adirondack Mountains in the south to the Canadian Shield in the North through what has been named the Frontenac Arch.

The St. Lawrence River technically begins underneath the international bridge where, on the Canadian side, water depth increases from about 30 feet before the bridge to close to 300 feet just past the bridge. This produces great currents in the river near this area, just off Ivy Lea. They are easily visible from the bridge.

The proximity to Lake Ontario creates vast climate differences from Kingston to Brockville. The lake moderates both temperature and humidity.

For example, the average number of frost free days on Aubrey Island near Gananoque is 160. The average number of frost free days on Stovin Island near Brockville is 143.

The islands also tend to split the weather. Storms tend to travel either north or south of the islands. In an average winter, the Tug Hill area near Watertown, New York receives more snow than the Kingston to Brockville region because the worst of the major storm systems – the Colorado Lows – tend to move south when they reach the islands.

The geological and climatic oddities of the Thousand Islands have created a unique biosphere where many southern flora and fauna reach their northern limits and many northern flora and fauna reach their southern limits.

This has created a unique mix of flora and fauna found nowhere else.

“Here, the five great forest regions of the eastern continent meet and intermingle, with many species at range limits, and with many as remnant populations from forests altered by millennia of climate change and evolving landscapes. This region has, arguably, Canada's greatest diversity of plant and animal communities,” says The Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve which is a UNESCO recognized biosphere and encompasses the Thousand Islands and portions of the hour-glass shaped arch reaching north and west of the islands.
