Nova Scotia '76 GL1000 do-over

#1

Post by Kasl »

Well, here we go. I came across a '76 GL, priced very much right, running so-so and in need of some lovin'.
I couldn't say no so it's in my garage. Shortly after that I purchased a "box bike"......Awesome find! Yes another '76 that someone dis-assembled with plans to rebuild but ran out of steam........So from the two bikes, lets make one good one! I figure if I record the rebuild as best I can it'll keep me on track and I certainly would appreciate any comments (good or bad : )

Now I need to figure out how to stick pictures on this forum.....Please bear with me as I give it a go

So lots of pieces have been removed so far, handlebars lowered as well...........don't mind leaning forward a little.
Let's try another pic.

Found a great 4-1 exhaust. Lucky find! It was pretty beat up. Had to "un-crush" the lowest pipes and shorten it a little. Good practice with the torches and the mig : ) AutoSol is a great product but I could not get a shine back on the pipes so the got the high-temp manifold paint treatment. The can shined up nice though. I need to make a small bracket to hold it to the frame......Also need a clamp to keep it from shooting off backwards....Oooops!

Removed gauges....really going for a minimalist look here. Probably should have at least a tach though : )
Found great hoody light. Love it!

I do love the look of the wider front tire (big thumbs up and thanks to Octane)!
Since I have an extra set of tires from the "box bike" I think I'm going to get really brave and attempt to spoke the back rim to the front hub. If I mess it up, Oh well, I still have the original front set-up.

Nice score on the 4 into 1. I am one of the "crowd" that has been on the look out for years. Though I am sure the folks around me are good with me NOT having one, as I leave for work at 04:45

Thanks guys! I have yet to tackle the brakes....One front caliper on the bike is seized and, of course, both are seized on the parts bike : )
Judging from the number of brake rebuilds mentioned on this site, it's probably rare to find a set of working Wing stoppers.

Unless somebody is using the bike and keeps the maintenance up they are going to freeze up. Most of us buy them dead after years of storage.

interesting, anyone else notice the 78-9 emblems on the side covers instead of the decal that was OEM?
