79 Resto Mod

#1

Post by Pokegama »

It's about time I started documenting my restoration and modifications to my 79, so here we go!
I found my Goldwing on Craigslist last September. It's my first motorcycle and I'm in my mid fifties, but better late than never! It was the cheapest one I could find and I paid just over $300.00 for it. I was looking for a project to keep me occupied through the winter and I got what I was looking for. It had a Vetter fairing and a sissy bar/luggage rack and hadn't be run for a couple of years according the the PO.
Image

I stripped the fairing and sissybar off it, got the enging running and put a few miles on it before tearing into it big time.
Image

So far I have had the frame and just about everything else I can think of powdercoated. I'm going with an Ivory color like Hotts Condor bike, I love that bike!
Image

The plan is to paint the side covers a root beer color and I have ordered a Corbon Gunfighter seat in the bomber jacket brown leather.

Thanks for the kind words.

I sent the forks, timing belt covers, carb caps, intakes and points cover off to Sunnbobb to work his magic on. I have them back and they are beautiful.

After seeing how good the ivory looked on the frame I decided to have the fenders powdercoated to match. I did the tail light housing in ivory too. I'm not sure I will stay with it but it looks good for now. I got the center stand and rear fender back on today and I like how it looks!
Image

Here's a shot of the seat leather on the fender. I can't wait to get the seat now! dancr

Lots of other work going on. I'm in the process of rebuilding the front forks with new seals and dust caps. I still need to strip and paint the engine. It's going to be the stock silver using the Duplicolor 1615 paint. The thermostat housing and water pump housing are polished. New wheel bearings are installed and the new tires are waiting to be mounted on the rims. I installed a Dyna S ignition before I pulled the engine and now I mounted up new Dyna coils on the frame!

Still more to come!

Good choice in color. Had my 62 Jag XKE roadster painted that color for couple years before I had it painted Candy Apple red over gold metallic base. It always struck me as something rich looking about that color.

I didn't do anything to clean the fenders up before I brought them in for coating. The chrome on the fenders was in pretty good shape so I had second thoughts about powdercoating them. The guy that does my powdercoating does a nice job at sandblasting and sanding stuff down and he put the powder on a little extra heavy. Even the underside looks like new now!
