my '83 AKA the Vincent

#1

Post by fish »

well back in 2007 when I discovered this forum & I remembered the great old NGW my roomie had back in 1980 then I knew I hadda get one & build it.
The interstate has much bigger wheels & tires, better brakes & 1100cc.
So I put my FishWife & son to looking for one for me.
I wound up with an '83 with canary yellow Krylon paint and all the usual accessories W/ trailer hitch & foorboards for driver & passenger.
The whole mess was Markland, A unified kit, all one piece, from crash bars to trailer hitch to foot boards, all one piece and rusty as can be & un salvageable.
THX to this forum I got stock stuff to nekkid-ize her. Only took an afternoon. Modified stock headpipes to make a 4 into 1 exhaust system & a vintage shoei fairing along with a pint of flat black completed the look.
I have put 'bout 3000 miles on her since then.
An increasingly leaky headgasket.. leaks oil onto the headpipes and the brakes dragging intermittantly led me to park her for a while.
So Here I am taking some time to make a few more modificatrions and fix some stuff as well. In mebbe a week I will start riding her all the time.

I also got a teensy speedo W/ integral odo, fuel, temp, indicator lights and it came with an electric sending unit for the speedo
This is going to let me dump the huge clunky stock gages &indicators. I am also gunna git rid of the ignition key switch & handlebar switch pods
Not sure yet what I will do to replace it, but something will come to me??
Maybe I will put the speedo & all the switches on the shelter?

sheesh what a tough crowd!
I spent 'bout 500$ on the clipons, speedo, headlight mounts & ect.... Aint it all purdy? action1
all anybody asks about is my rear brake modification?
It was too easy
I loostened the axle nut & the axle pinch bolt and removed the caliper stay rod. & disconnected the brake line
The caliper rotated down.
I hadda' "modify" the caliper stay rod & weld a new mount for it on the bottom of the swing arm
Then I re-routed the brake line
easy-peasy
Perhaps some of the more discerning & insightfull members might be thinking
"now how is Fish going to bleed the brakes? the bleeder is at the bottom of the caliper"
"the caliper is upside down"
I will disconnect the brake stay rod, rotate the caliper to the top and bleed it normally, then re-rotate it back to the bottom.

I rillyrilly like the teensy chrome front fender.
It makes the tire look huge!

I got some exotic ideas for the front brakelines,.
Every M/C I look at has brake hoses and speedo cable cluttering the front forks.
I have been dreaming for years how to clean up that area.....
Maybe I could route the brakelines inside the fork legs?
I also hate the handlebar area, all the switchpods and cables look dumb.
Maybe I will mount all the switches on top of the shelter.

Brake lines inside fork tubes...mmmm. I gotta think on that one. That'll take a special metal/armoured hydraulic hose and fittings, etc. Mmmm, maybe it could be a "fly-by-wire" unit????

Mount some of the needed switches out near the handle bar grip area "in" the handlebar tube. On/off pushbutton or momentary contact like the newer HD turn signal switch/s work. OR use the handlebar as an area for the LED lights to show that the turn signals, neutral light, oil pressure light are working.
