Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
I don't doubt your finds about the carb springs on the Valk, but it does seem odd that those would have been your problem. Many folks have changed them out without trouble. Perhaps yours is just unique!

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
Nice stuff as always.
I have been trying to clear the deck to start my Valk project. Won a bid on ebay for a nice set of carbs from a "good running bike". They were less expensive than the rebuild kit so I am hoping they are as advertised. I do plan to de-smog while I have it apart. As soon as I get it running good, I will strip it down to paint.

G'day to Everyone
Well you know, toilets are wonderful things, they give you time to think latterly whilst you "Sit & Think"
So there I was, wondering why my #2 is running like an absolute "Pig"
The timing belts are spot on as I checked them four times now
The ignition timing is so close that it cant be that
Compression is good enough and the plugs fine
All four exhaust pipes get hot
#2 & #4 exhaust headers are very hot
Then it hit me ...... I have #2 & #4 plug leads crossed, thus they are firing on the exhaust stroke
So I then quickly signed the necessary government documents and faxed the lot off to Canberra and zipped out to check my plug leads and sure enough I was right
"Some mothers do have em"
Well it was a lesson for me and I hope the symptoms may help others to not make a fool of themselves
I still have my carbs in a million pieces as I ultrasonically cleaned the bases for 2 hours each yesterday, so whilst I was waiting I had the time to fit the handlebar clock to the Valky, but I didn't want it off to one side so I machined a hole in the handlebar clamp and put it there.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
So as for my diaphragm spring. they may not be the root of my problems, but with them removed she runs real good.
Possibly some fine tuning as time goes on and careful monitoring of fuel consumption will help get her perfect?
Also the fuel here must be different, firstly no ethanol, and the fact of #78 main jets as standard and a different carb model indicates something different.
Looking forward to giving you all good news about how #2 runs and handles on the road very soon

- I could only bore the handlebar cover out to 42mm otherwise the side wall would be compromised and the piece would fly out of the chuck to destruction so I machined the clock base down from 45mm to 42mm.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
Hey Pete,
Clock looks great there on the bars. I pulled my Valk off the back porch and into the shop the other day. The carbs were pretty crusty (as is the rest of the bike) and I ran across what turned out to be a really nice clean set of carbs for less than the cost of the rebuild kits, so I am taking the lazy mans way and just replacing the whole rack. I did pull all the bowls to make sure there was no crud in them and was pleased to see they looked like new. Hopefully they will run that way. I pulled all the smog hardware and as soon as I get the new O-rings it will go back together. I had a couple quarts of used brake fluid available so I just dropped the intake rubbers in the jar for a soak. Hopefully that will make re-installation easier.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
G'day to Everyone!
I like that "rudolphwolven", I will be doing similar to my 1000's
So I stripped and ultrasonically cleaned my carbs again.
Found one tube under the secondary jet that had only 4 holes in it, the rest had 5, so I stripped my spare 78 down and they all had 5 holes. ........... all fixed up now.
re-assembled and started her up. she runs like a pig at low rpm so I unscrewed the mixture screws 1/2 a turn, much better now, but still usc down low.
Took her for a test ride around the block, handles ok but I didn't go over 50 km/h though. Had trouble changing gear, up ok but down changing was bad, lever hitting exhaust pipe? will look into it all next break.
But for me it is a milestone, just on 3 years in the making and the first ride

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
G'day to Everyone!
I am getting a little frustrated with my #2 project, just cant get her to run smooth (sure its carburation?).
so to give my head a rest I have started on my #5 project as my grandson is showing absolutely no interest in motorbikes
I want to do something a little radical with this one, but for the moment I am just stripping her down to see what I have to relace, so far it looks like the engine has never been removed from the frame
Best wishes to All, Peter.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
G'day to All!
I had some achievements yesterday.
I massaged an old gear shift lever so it does not hit the exhaust header whilst changing down. (that was the easy bit)
I had a terrible frustrating time setting the Dyna ignition, I just couldn't get it right, had to walk away from it several times
Eventually I discovered that when I set it, it was spot on two crank turns later but out on only one rank turn, then I realized that the camshaft is probably a little bent ...... Ok set it mid way.
assemble the points cover and just for luck give it one last check way out!
Yes the rotor that I previously had was not correct for a Goldwing, thus the pick-ups were also wrong they stuck out a tad more than they should and when I put the points cover on they got squished in
My remedy for the moment is I now have 4 cover gaskets to give me the clearance, this will have to do until I can purchase a new set that fits correctly. what a difference that makes, have to test ride her today.
Happy & Safe Riding to All that can.
Peter.
I have stripped down the 78 as far as I want to for this stage and I have noticed that someone has welded a couple of brackets on the steering head. Is there anyone out there that could enlighten me as to what they are for? I see the same thread holes in my 75 & 76 frames too

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
G'day to All!
After a couple of rides I find that she is a bit touchy on the steering, my guess is that the hand grips on the handlebars are too close to the steering column, so I changed them out for a stock Goldwing set that are straight but a little sunburnt in areas, now I hope to test ride her soon
Fitted the seat and daggy carpet to do for the moment. The boat needs some fibreglass repairs and modifications, the windscreen is badly sun crazed and the seat needs re upholstering, and then the lot needs a fresh coat of paint.
But I will ride her around for a while like this to iron all the bugs out of her.

G'day to All and back again for today
I just bought a brand new Dyna ignition for her on e-bay, be a couple of weeks until it gets here though.
Put #1 back up on the bench so I can continue to work on her, I have most of the parts, it is just the time to do it all that is scarce.
All the best, peter.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
G'day and Happy New Year to Everyone!
Well the #1 didn't stay on the bench for long, the #2 outfit is back up there. I removed the timing unit and checked the camshaft for trueness with a dial gauge, she is spot on which is good as I don't really want to change out the camshaft again. Just waiting for the new correct Dyna unit to arrive so I can fit them back in.
Now that I have started on my #5 project (1978) I have been mulling about how to do her. I still want her to be a GoldWing but with a difference.
I am only 5' 3" and I find the 1000's seat height a little high but I want to extend the forks 2" and shorten a good set of rear shocks by about 3/4". I also like the look of the "Corbin Gunfighter" seats so I am going to carve out one of my spares, but if I make a mess of that I will just have a new gunfighter sent.

Re: Pedro!'s rebuilding projects
For the fork extension I bought a short length of Chrome steel, the stuff hydraulic rams are made of. The outer section is hard and the swarf is very blue and hot, especially when bits go down the front of my shirt or wedge between my toes, but the centre is soft and easy to bore out.
They didn't have any 37mm diameter stuff so I had to accept 40mm and machine it down.
I guess they will show signs of sunburn (rust) after a while, but most will be covered by the stock headlamp ears, I just might Nickel plate the top bit that is visible.
I also put a threaded hole in the top so as I can change the fork oil without dismantling, and extended the lower bit to compress the spring an extra 20mm (19mm = 3/4")
Haven't worked out what I am going to do today, but I will report if anything interesting happens.
