I use a machine shop in a small town that I just pay cash, so he is very reasonable compared to the bigger motorcycle specific shops. Really quite a bit of the work was refurbishing and reusing a lot of the original parts as much as possible.
So some of the issues with items still leaking like the front brake pistons or the water pump gasket seal were from trying to reuse the old caliper pistons or aftermarket gaskets and O rings. In some areas Mother Honda is the best source for parts that work well the first time.
There were lots of "whack a mole moments" with fixing one issue after another as previously outlined, so my plan is to put this bike on the road next spring with vintage insurance and enjoy riding it for awhile.

I am actually looking forward to getting it dirty and some miles in the seat. This will be my first early Wing that I have had any seat time on once the spring gets here. I owned for about 4 years a 1980 GL1100 Standard that I restored and sold when I purchased the 1984 GL1200. I really like the GL1200 Standard quite a lot, yet I missed the GL1100 and wished I had kept it, yet here in Canada insurance is quite expensive to have multiple bikes insured and on the road. I have finally found a broker who will offer Vintage insurance with an appraisal on each bike that makes it much more affordable.
The GL1100 just seemed to handle differently than the GL1200, if you can talk about handling of a Goldwing. It just had a different feel and ride that I am hoping the GL1000 will offer again in a slightly different size and frame package.

It is a curious thing about the handling, I have or have had several 1100s a couple of 1000s and a 1200 standard, and not one of them felt like the others. Different bars, different seats, even when they look almost identical they just feel different.

Well it took my appraiser guy almost 3 months to get it finished and to be fair he has had some health issues over the winter, so no big deal. The weather has been pretty nice though up here for most of the month of February, since a very warm spell has dispatched the snow in short order. I am looking forward to some final carb and ignition tweaking and getting this bike on the road.
I wonder about these appraisals though since they seem to have no basis on the actual market price that the bike would sell for in the real world. He gave it an $8600 Canadian value which is kind of like the real estate market at the moment... out of touch with reality..... as in overheated
The good news is with the Vintage insurance in place any claim now is based on the appraised value of the bike.

Hmmmm .... I think I would clarify the terms, most of those type of policies have strict limits and if you had a problem they might decide not to pay if they could squirm out of it ....
That said, I might investigate since my very basic policy is costing nearly $700./year

Since they record every conversation they need to outline that and send me any restrictions on the policy if they exists.

Just reading your thread, excellent job. Insurance is an issue wherever. I have an '08 1800 and an '85 1200 Limited Edition. Full insurance for the 1800 is approximately $1600.00 per year. I have a Collector's plate (over 25 years old) on my 1200 and the insurance is $300.00 per year - no limitations. This has been a guiding factor in what I am riding. I can do a lot of maintenance/work on the '85 for $1300.00 a year.
I have a second '85 LTD that I am going to put on the road as well with a Collector's plate so I will have a bike available at all times to ride. Never know when you have to take one off the road and do some work/maintenance.
I'm also of the opinion that a bike that is mechanically sound regardless of age will go from point A to B just as well as a more modern bike. Even new bikes have issues.
