GL1-1001653
So, back in early December I was looking for a new project. Initially I was thinking to just find a motorcycle engine that needed some light work intending to do my very first ever proper engine rebuild. What I came across instead, still within the $300 budget I set for myself was this https://youtu.be/rDN8NAz8K84) More details to follow.
- a 75 GL1000, frame serial GL1-1001653. Engine seized. Someone left it with two of the plugs out in the Oregon rain for about 2 years (gratefully not much longer). She runs now - quite well, even. She had her second test ride yesterday. (2004 Honda Shadow VLX (VT600CD) - first bike. Great commuter and comfy for longer rides.
1984 Honda Shadow (VT700C) - bought this one in rough shape but running (barely) so I could learn to work on bikes. Now an optional daily rider.
1975 Honda Goldwing (GL1000) - current project. First total rebuild.
1984 Honda Shadow (VT700C) - bought this one in rough shape but running (barely) so I could learn to work on bikes. Now an optional daily rider.

Details. How far in did you have to go?
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: GL1-1001653
I had to go pretty far in! I managed to polish most of the rust out of her left cylinders but her rings on that side had some rust too so... it all came apart. I bought a proper flex hone to re-establish the crosshatch in both of the left cylinders and that, of course, involved a total teardown. I took measurements all along the way, verified that her bearings, crank, and everything else I could find were within spec, cleaned her out pretty well and reassembled. I ended up borrowing parts from two '75 GL1000 engines to get her to where she is now.. Replaced her main wiring harness due to a LOT of jinky modifications some PO made. Twist and tape is NOT the answer, in general. Also replaced her rear wheel bearing while I was at it...
