GL1000 clutch cable route

#1

Post by buckleb »

I am a new member with a small problem. After pulling the engine and replacing the stator on my 78 GL1000, I find too much play in the clutch cable. Not enough to work out with the cable adjusters.

Can someone ppplllease give me the correct cable route. Will this solve the problem?

I have already adjusted the spring mechanism from the engine rear, and think it is ok.

The cable worked fine before the breakdown... just started the problem after reinstallation.

Help!!! I need to get back on the road again

Hello and welcome to our forum buckleb. thup

I think the clutch cable follow the wiring on the left side,
but I am not sure about that, it's been a long time since
I have worked on a GL1000.

thanks for the second.... I will need to evaluate my current placement.

My Haynes manual says to tighten the adjustment to the point of slight resistance and then lock down the clutch adjustment set nut.

Is that your info, or do you have any other help that might prove beneficial?

Thanks

I can try: loosen the locknuts on the upper cable adjuster screw
and lower adjuster screw and screw both adjusters in as far as possible.

Loosen the locknut on the end of the clutch operating shaft and turn the
shaft in a clockwise direction until it becomes hard to turn. Rotate the
shaft back 3/4 turn and tighen the locknut. Fine adjustment can be made
by using the upper adjustment. Hope this help.

ROuting of the cable had no effect on its function unless it gets pinched, or is not long enough to reach!!! You could let the thing flop about in teh breeze outside the frame as long as the two ends are connected. Where length affects cable operation is in the length of teh actual cable to its sheath.

We end up making a lot of custom length cables for various uses, such as on our superkart:

A good bike mechanic only needs two tools, WD40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move, but should, use the WD40. If it does move but shouldn't use the duct tape.

KArts like this are raced at tracks such as Mid-Ohio, Road America, Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta, and other such major fullsize road race courses. As a biker, you might have heard of this guy that currently races one of these karts:

Image

His name is Eddie Lawson.

There's a good article on the superkarts here:

http://users.cyberzane.net/rforker/Popu ... ePage1.htm

Depending on the particular track, top speed can range from around 140mph at say, Mid-Ohio or Laguna, up to 160mph+ on the high banks at Daytona.

The yellow kart in the pictures above is our Superkart. The photos show it set-up with a Honda CRF450 mx engine, highly modified by an AMA national champion winning flattrack engine builder. In the multi-cylinder class, the most common engiens are the Yamaha TZ250 and the Honda RS250, v-twin engiens straight off of GP motorcycles. Performacne is astounding, to say the least. THese are not your daddy's 'go-karts'. Requires special licensing to drive them.

TO get a small teasing of what karts are like, since your location is identified as Boston, check out http://www.f1boston.com
Just remember those are rentla, concession karts, not 160mph, superkarts.

BTW, at Laguna Seca race in teh spring of last year, my son Ted was running in third when the cam chain tensioner broke. The two guys just ahead of him, all running comparable lap times, were Lawson and Wayne Rainey.
