in full agreement. ;)
Although I have experience with only one set of GL carburetors, those on my trike, it was very apparent that Honda's listed baseline pilot screw adjustment setting, is too lean.
As Whiskerfish and Robin have advised, enrichen the pilot mixture screws from that "factory spec"and learn how the idle drop procedure, in concert with carburetors' synchronization process, helps to refine each of the 4 individual carburetors pilot fuel ("hot" engine idle state) delivery requirements. tumb2

Thanks,
I went 2 turns out but ran out of time and sunlight to do the idle drop. I gassed it up and rode a little, I would like to say it's better but it might be wishful thinking. The idle speed is up to 2K so that's an improvement.

I can't wait until I love this 78 as much as I did the old black 79. It is prettier, I plan on a couple thousand mile trip in Aug. I'd hate to have to take a 750. L0L!

My 79 had 83 carbs, in the old days they thought it was a speed secret.

Personally I like my idle about 1050 - 1100. 2k is too high you need to adjust the idle screw.

Yeah, getting first gear at that rpm probably won't sound nice. ;)

I get that 2K is too high, I wasn't going to leave it there. It got dark and late so I didn't adjust any more, the point is that the idle went up so I'd assume the engine was happy with the adjustments so far, Thanks for the help. I like to assume I'm a reasonably intelligent guy but there are a lot of things you guys have more experience with and I do appreciate the tips.

At 2k RPM it's not in the idle circuit. You'll have to drop it to below 1200 and do the idle drop again and sync. May have to do the idle drop and sync 2 or 3 more times. Maybe not. You want to end up with 1000 to 1100 rpm smooth idle and little to no hesitation off idle.

Interesting side note, this morning I was warming my bike up. With no choke it was missing a bit on one side so I messed with idle screws. I've never touched them before except at idle. At 2000 rpm it affects the idle quality much more than at idle. Granted, this is on my hybrid.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I dropped the idle and with more adjusting and riding, it seems to be improved, I'll keep after it.

Trying to sync multiple carbs by ear is an exercise in futility. Yes you can tweek them a little and make it "sound good" but the only to get it right is to use sync gauges at idle speed.

Also trying to sync carbs without first making absolutely sure the ignition timing is spot on, mechanical or vacuum advance is free and working properly, the valve lash to spec and belt timing marks correct, is just a waste of time. Once the engine mechanicals are perfect then is the time to sync.

She's a bagger again, so far I left the trunk off. I made a nice set of Vetter bags from two sets. One with matching doors, one with good condition bodies. I also put on a luggage rack, just for my vacation trip, when that's done it will go back half naked again.

A friend that has a shop offered me a set of known good gl1100 carbs for a test and I could run them while mine are being cleaned again by a pro. (him).

Update--
For some reason the windjammer had a different key so I traded the lock cylinder from the trunk to it and tightened up the lower mounting tab. Now I only need two keys unless I decide to put the trunk back on. With the stock turn signals back on I'm going to wire up the drag specialties lights up to work as additional brake and tail lights. I got a pack of misc. glass fuses since the taillight and instrument fuse blew, and replaced the dogbone fuse with a blade fuse.
Just tuning and getting it the way I want it. The charging system plug looked good so I cleaned the contacts and added some di-electric grease and just plugged it back in.

Old Blue got a random miss in second or third gear, mid rpm's. I checked the plug caps, wires and coils, looked OK. I borrowed a known good set of 1100 carbs, it got worse. I replaced the plug caps and separated the wires, it was great. I rode to Sturgis and it ran awesome. I got home put my carbs back on and the miss came back, I separated the wires and slipped plastic covers over them and after a warm up it's running good again. Not 100% but way better. I ran it in the dark with the airbox off and can't see any spark leak, I'm thinking coils and wires and eventually a dyna or Hondaman transistor ign. Opinions on coils? I'm considering used gl1500 or new 5 ohm dynas. What's the hot ticket?

It's a big time dead cylinder now, I'll pull the plugs tomorrow but in the meantime, I ordered a dyna ign. and a set of gl1500 coils. My buddy with the bike shop may go through my carbs again. Shotgun approach, it uses a little oil, I'm hoping the plugs look OK. After Sturgis the gas tank got really cleaned out and I removed the extra fuel filter. I'll check fuel press and flow also.
