Hydraulic lifters on the 1200

#1

Post by Easter »

I have a 1200 engine that I am thinking of using for my next build. It was locked up but I pulled the heads and cleaned the cylinders and it seems fine now but the heads need attention. I have not pulled the cams but glancing through the manual it looks like there could be some issues with draining and refilling the hydraulic lifters.

Will this be necessary if the cam holders and lifters come off as a unit? Anyone done this before? I am hoping to just clean the heads and lap the valves.
Bikes at present:

83 XL 600r with a 2004 XR650L engine
And a slightly worse for the wear BMW GS adventure bike awaiting repair
83 GL in process :IDTS:

The manual say to ALWAYS keep the heads oriented in the same plain as when they are on the bike. A little hard to do if you are doing valves. It has a procedure for bleeding them. I have had luck just putting them back together. They are not quit the same as car lifters. The manual has the procedure.
