Overheating

#1

Post by leggman »

I had my 79 running the other day while I was doing some sorting out of the carburetor system. As I had it running I was watching the temp gauge and it slowly came up to the point where it was getting too hot for my liking so I hit the panic button (the toggle switch I installed to make the fan come on).
At one time I had the fan switch out and did some testing in hot water and it seemed to work fine?
Can someone show me a diagram of where the fan should kick on and off in relation to the gauge?
I got on ebay and ordered a new switch just to try out.
I know the wiring is right because inserting a jumper does make the fan come on.
Thanks... Dave

Dave -

The gauges on most of the GL1000's are not very accurate, and you will see a lot of variation from bike to bike. On my '78 you need to be at about 3/4's of the way to the "red" before the fan kicks on. My '76 ran a lot hotter "on the gauge" before the fan would switch on.

My '78 is the same way. To be honest, around here, by the time the fan kicks on, it's too late to "catch up" if in traffic. I've put override switches on several motorcycles, but not this '78. It has never overheated, but I probably will install one this fall. It'll probably take all of 30 minutes to do it.

I changed the switch and now it kicks the fan on but way up the gauge. I would like to put in a better gauge if possible

Is your 7-volt regulator really putting out 7-volts?

mine kicks in a little above half. What I would worry about is if it did not kick in at all.
