USE IN A WELL VENTILATED SPACE!
If it looks like I am yelling that, I am. Also always add acid to water rather than the other way.

Re: Gas tank cleaning
I let it spin for about 15 minutes then emptied the acid and flushed with water and baking soda, then just plenty of water, It is spotless inside now. Now for the bad news. The reserve line is hopelessly clogged. I have tried running old choke cable up in there and it goes about halfway then it is blocked. compressed air doesn't work either. As I see it right now I have several options.
first option is to just live with it and be very careful watching the gas gauge.
second option is to find yet another tank.
third option is to reach inside the tank and cut the tube before the blockage and splice in another line to the bottom of the tank.
Fourth option is to split the tank at the weld seam and fix it right then weld the two halves back together.
I have two other tanks but they are both from 1100 wings and I don't believe they will work.
One step forward, two steps back. The story of my life.

Re: Gas tank cleaning
you might try the acid treatment a second time and just let it sit... that might finally work.... It took me a while to clear out the line on my 79. I couldn't get a tach cable down it either. If you have a syringe, you might inject some acid down the hole

Re: Gas tank cleaning
I would try the cable method a little longer, sure you'll break through, then use the cable clockwise so it scrapes the internal surfaces of the tube.
If you bought another tank you may have the same, or worse, issues.

Re: Gas tank cleaning
It was full of forty year old Kreem liner. I hate the stuff, It should never be used in a bike that has pickup screens.
The plan is to carefully pound out all the dents and bead blast the inside, then clean the tubes, (the reserve tube is clogged on this one as well but I think it is because or the Kreem liner)
I might have to cut off the screen at the reserve tube. Then carefully weld the two halves back together. The plan is to use my oxy/acetelene jewlers torch but I also have some small welding torches as well.

Re: Gas tank cleaning
Your acid-cleaned tank looks pretty good to me, but it is flash-rusting when you remove the acid. When you drain the acid, you need to IMMEDIATELY neutralize the metal with water/baking soda, then drain that and spray a ton of WD-40 or MMO inside to coat the bare metal.

Re: Gas tank cleaning
I neutralized the acid with baking soda and water then after drying put in some atf and sloshed it around. I am still trying to get the lower tube on the tank I split open to unclog without removing the screen. The talk liner shure gummed up the works.

Re: Gas tank cleaning
Get a speedo or tach cable cut it down to 18" and use a drill on slow speed to ream the lines out the reserve is only 8" or so while the other is at least 12"+ just be careful not to poke through the screens

Re: Gas tank cleaning
I think the problem is you don't use the proper de rust product. I don't know if you in USA have something similar, but you need a de rust product that de rust and passivate the metal.

Re: Gas tank cleaning
The tank on my CX-500 police trike had a Kreem liner that was disintegrating. It had sat with fuel in it for about 11 years before I acquired it. I ended up taking the tank to an industrial radiator shop that also does fuel tanks and they worked their magic on it.CYBORG wrote:looks like a product called "kreem", that was not installed properly

Re: Gas tank cleaning
Yes, phosphoric acid creates a thin layer of iron phosphate which doesn't rust. I do my own tanks like that. It's gray to black though so you won't have that white metal look that everyone wants to see in a tank.

I went with the good tank doing bypass surgery on it today. I cut the blocked tube and installed a rubber fuel line and new strainer.
