‘77 GL1000 Daytime Running Lights

#1

Post by MattMcCoy »

Howdy!

The rear turns and brake light are illuminated as daytime running lights on a ‘77, but the front turns are not. All other lights work as they should. It looks like the 3rd wire for the running lights is simply switched between front and rear connections, but I haven’t chased the wires yet. Am I on the right track and if so, where is that connection?

Thank you.

Most of those connections are either in the headlight bucket or that wad of wires inside the left side shelter. I would check the bulbs and the housings to make sure they were not swapped out at some point to a single filament type before chasing wires.

Rears should be indicators only. Fronts should be both indicators and DRL. Different bulbs. If someone put a single-filament bulb in the front, it bridges the two circuits and you get very odd results.

What Wiskerfish and shadowjack said. Front indicator bulbs are dual element, rear are single element for indicators.

I installed front signals on the rear of mine so I could have dual filament and 2 extra brake lights. Used a trailer converter to get it.

But like everyone said, pull the bulb and then look at the base of the socket for 2 pads. That will let you know if someone mixed up front and rears at some point. If so, get some replacement housings and switch them out and wire it up like factory. Should work without any issues.

Thanks for the tips and advice. Both front/rear turns have dual-element bulbs, but the rear has two wires (turn/running light) and front only has one wire (turn). I’ll need to switch those to pass inspection.

throw one of these on there, get run/turn/brake lights on the rear signals to increase rear visibility.

You have to be careful about using the rear directionals as running lights, as most states do not allow amber lights in the rear except as turn signals. Depending on your setup, you may be able to find a replacement red lens (in my opinion, an amber turn signal is better...).

It doesn't matter which state (or province) you live in, US DOT & Transport Canada regulations do not allow any amber lights on the rear of any vehicle except for turn signals.

As for the red lenses, studies have proven that amber turn signals are much more easily recognized as such than red ones (probably why the US is one of a very few places that allows red ones anymore). Personally, I would have left the rear signals as signals only with amber lenses and added extra red lights if I wanted more brake lights.

Interesting about the amber vs red effectiveness... just ride like nobody can see you anyways, pretend like you don't even have signals!

Thanks for the help with lights. Moving right along, I have a little issue where the ‘77 is dying — once on the side stand, once riding up a hill, and a couple times while parking up a steep driveway. I can’t save it by cracking the throttle, so I think it’s flooding. My plan is to pull the 1100 carbs that are on the bike and check float height and the needle jet for wear. It has a Randakk rebuild kit.

What height should the floats be set — 1000 or 1100 specs? Anything else to look into?

You should use the specs for the carbs you are using.
