GL1000 UJ lubrication

#1

Post by KeithS »

I've read that the UJ is lubricated from the factory and any greasing of the outside (inside the rubber boot) won't really help.
As the bike is nearly back together and I seem to have overlooked that joint, do I need to mess about trying to lube the outside of the UJ with grease?
I'm about to do the rear of the shaft and splines but that is out in the open for me to do compared with the front joint!

The u joint has no provision to grease it. About the only thing on these bikes that is not serviceable.

Mike, was that U joint rebuilt? Looks like original stake points were redone and new joint fitted.

Yes I rebuilt it using the truck steering u joint. Time will tell if it holds up.

thanks MikeNTexas, it was the U-shaped term that had me confused. I see that you have rebuilt it, that's what I'm trying to do here in Italy too, I don't know if you had read my posts, it's not that I do the job, I wouldn't be able to do it, but through a friend I have contacted a repair shop that works for Ferrari Prototypes and their Sport racing cars, and they told me that it is possible to replace the joint, it was only to be established if it was better to weld or press, or define the times of processing for stable a cost. being a workshop that works for Ferrari, the costs are certainly not low, but the work should be of quality!

U-joint = universal joint (what you would call a Cardan joint)

A long time ago, I was taught that technically, a Cardan joint was TWO cross-yokes in one carrier. Used in old Cadillacs to eliminate all drivetrain vibration, IIRC.
