Poor to non existent throttle spring back …GL1100

#1

Post by Pb9717 »

I recently rebuilt and re-installed the carbs on a newly acquired 82’ 1100, using the Randakks kit and manual. The carbs perform beautifully, but the carb linkage doesn’t return . This issue was in place during rebuild. I would spray the butterfly’s at their pivot points, and they’d free right up, but the morning after I installed the carbs, the return action had decreased dramatically to virtually nil. With no ability to access the butterfly’s I’ve found no way to free them up. I took the bike for its first ride today just around the neighborhood, and it ran nicely, good fueling and smooth acceleration, but the throttle doesn’t return at all. I have to return it manually. A friend stated that there may be some residual residue in the butterfly pivot points that might liquify upon heating, and the carbs return action may come back.

Also, as this was the first time I’ve driven the bike, and my first time on a Goldwing, Vintage or otherwise, I was surprised by the on/off style fueling and significant engine braking. Also, the idle was set so low, (500 rpm at throttle closed position) that when I came to a stop it seemed like the engine wasn’t even running. And if you do a sudden decrease motion with the throttle, the bike really engine brakes hard. I raised the idle to about 1100 rpm, so I know the engines running when I come to a stop.

Any insights as to how I might remedy this without tearing out/tearing down the carbs and boiling the carb bodies?

You need to check the big spring on the plenum bellcrank to make sure it is installed correctly. The bellcrank should snap back to the idle stop with authority. You should be able to hear it hit the idle stop clear across the shop with the engine off.

The bell rank spring was never removed, and when the carb was on the bench it did snap back normally after spraying the butterfly pivots with carb cleaner…. But… I’ll Re inspect it to confirm.

Cables are lubed and free…. Before being attached to the carbs there was zero binding. I’m pretty sure this is a shortcoming in the carb body cleaning. Just didn’t want to believe I’m going to have to remove, disassemble , boil the carb bodies and put it all back together…but I’m starting to feel it’s unavoidable.

Pb9717, you would not be the first one to have to remove the carbs more than one time including me.
