Shelter Swap Question

#1

Post by WingedMedic »

Greetings fellow Goldwing aficionados! Please forgive me if this question has been answered 1000 times before, I DID search and could not find an answer:

Will the shelter (top and side panels) from a '78-'79 fit on a '77 (or earlier model) GL?

I wish to use the gauge pod for aftermarket gauges on my '77.

Thank you in advance. Please stay tuned for more dumb questions. I'd rather not reinvent the wheel - so I will lean on the collective knowledge of this most enthusiastic and wise group!

Cheers - David

No, in the sense the panels won't just bolt up.

Yes, in that if you replace the entire shelter assembly (panels, frame, everything), it should just bolt right up to the frame. You may have issues with the fuel filler neck being a bit too short, but I have no idea if this is a deal-breaker.

Lucien -
Thanks for the fast reply! I will have to start hunting for a '78-'79 donor-cycle... Maybe swapping the filler neck from the donor bike will work too.
I didn't realize the frame was bolted on - I thought it was welded. Since I am planning on a major electrical upgrade, this will work out. I've been eyeing one of those fancy electronic distribution systems - with built in brake and head light modulators as my next major upgrade. I will also be swapping the front end for a more modern set-up. Seems that a lot of folks are going to Gixxer front ends. I'll be asking about ST1000 and CB1000 conversions soon.
Thanks again for the advice.

No worries. The only way to get a longer filler neck is to swap the whole gas tank with one from a 78/79, which is a "remove the entire back end" job. But once the new shelter is on it should be pretty pretty obvious if you need to even do this.

I didn't think the tanks were different from 75-77 to 78-79. But they could be. Yes you have to swap out the shelter frame. The other thing is the electricals are different. Not a deal breaker, but you have to mount things a bit different

Yes I forget which is which but one filler neck is a shorter than the other. Like maybe an inch.

Iirc, the 78/79 have the longer filler neck, and it's only a problem if you're swapping an early shelter on to a late bike because the neck is too long to allow the lid to close. A late shelter on an early short neck SHOULD be fine, I would think.
