G'day to All
since i goofed up with the springs in the carbs and she was running not so good here is another querie for you.
There are two Timing Advance Units, one for the 75~77 machines and one for the 78~79
Have i got the correct springs on the units below or have i goofed them up as well ???
This all comes from having 5 machines and ripping everything apart to clean and choose the best parts out.
Thanks in advance, Peter

The Part numbers in the pics are correct for those years but I can not say for certain about the spring lengths.

Re: GL-1000 Timing Advance Units
G'day to Everyone!
I have in my hands a 1977 GL-1000 belonging to another member of the Goldwing group that I ride with, he bought it a while ago for when he doesn't want to ride the 1800.
as usual someone was there before and cleaned the carbs up but did not remove the emulsion tubes which were full of black crap. All getting a proper ultrasonic clean.
While in my hands i checked the ignition advance unit for the size of the springs and they are exactly as the picture that is posted earlier.
I am now slowly compiling the differences between the models (things that matter) and will post when complete so everyone can see what they have and what shey should have.
Happy and Safe Riding to All, Peter

Re: GL-1000 Timing Advance Units
The notable difference performance is the 75-77 had 5 more degrees of advance over the 78-79. This is because the 78-79 was timed at ten degrees to start with while the 75-77 was timed at 5 degrees. Both advanced to 37.5 degrees total advance. (Going by memory) The 78-79 had those little rubber tipped pads to keep the springs.
I always wonder what they looked like dynamically. I tweaked one set to go to around 41 degrees, but I could not feel any performance change or measure any economy difference.

Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: GL-1000 Timing Advance Units
I'm sure that almost all of the changes in these things from year to year were to adjust for changing government emission standards and are not measurable except in the factory engine labs.
