1100 shelter rehab

I bought an 1100 shelter off of eBay for my 1200 standard conversion project. Couple of questions.

I also bought a tool tray, but I’m not seeing how to mount it. Am I missing piece(s):

The fit of the seals is a little sketchy and the lid isn’t real tight and rocks a bit. Is there any way to improve the fit here?

The tray doesn't really mount, it rests on top of the air box.

rotate the tool tray 180 degrees. The indentation is to make room for the coolant tank

The tool tray probably won't fit on a 1200 because it simply rests on the 1100 air box and is shaped to fit.

thoughts on the seals and the lid that doesnt quite sit fliush?

Had the same issue when I rebuilt my 1100. If you are planning on repainting you may want to do what I did and remove the seals particularly the ones between the halves and fiberglass the two parts together. I think the rubber seals around the lids were OK in my case and I reused them. But if yours are too far gone then maybe you can fiberglass or use body filler around the edges to get to get a closer and more attractive fit. I also removed the badge and filled the depression where it sits.

I may be wrong - as the angle of the lock is a bit too off for a clear view - but it looks like the lock is not OEM.

Here's a shot of the Blue Phoenix's (GL1100) shelter.

Your lock seems to have a rubber gasket around it. Additionally, the shelter frame part where the lock clicks in looks different from those on my GL1100s. You may have an aftermarket lock.

You may also be able to adjust the lock to pull it down more tightly. With the shelter off, working from underneath, you may be able to play around a bit and get something to work for you. There's a "post" sticking up, and it seems like you may be able to shorten it a bit by adjusting the nut some. If the lock seats lower, perhaps that'll do the trick.

On the rubber bits, you can carefully slip out the pieces between the shelter halves and slide them back in post-paint. Or take Sagebrush's advice, which is probably so much better - if your body work is up to it.

I don't know that replacement rubber is available. I used masking tape to cover mine when I painted the shelter. It worked out.

Cover the bike, don't plan a ride in heavy rain, and try to reduce water intrusion there.

Someone - Track T? - advised me to use a plastic bag under the shelter cover when parked to keep water out of the carbs and crankcase in the event of super heavy rain. (Don't ask how I came to learn that lesson.)

I put the push button latch on myself. The shelter had no lock when I got it.

But even with that hardware off and lots of fiddling and adjusting, the lid won’t sit flat. So idk at this point. I may unbolt the whole thing and see if it becomes obvious why the fit is a little odd.

Will definitely fibreglass the halves together.

As a last resort I will fibreglass the top solid and put a filler cap or something in. I’m not a big fan of the lids anyway.

Once the bike is together and you are sitting on it you hardly notice the lids until you need to look at your coolant level or air filter and you don't have to take the seat off so you can get at the bolts to take the shelter off.....
Then you will start to appreciate being able to open the top of the shelter.

Does anyone know of a direct replacement barrel latch of some kind for the shelter lids? Like maybe a turn latch that doesn’t require a key and not too tall?

I had a cassette player mounted in the tool tray of my 1000 so I replaced the shelter lid's original lock with a cam lock of the type used for metal cabinets so that I could open it to change tapes while driving.
It was about 18 years ago and I didn't make notes so all I can tell you is that it is possible but I have no idea how I made it work.
