GL1100 oil strainer
Do any of you guys remove and clean the oil pickup strainer on a GL1100?Is it ever necessary to do this taking into account the problem with the front bolt of the cover?(To long to remove without swearing a lot!)

Re: GL1100 oil strainer
If the bike was new to me, I would check it. If oil pressure was low, I would check it. If engine was out of the frame, I would check it. If, when I changed the oil, there was crap in the old oil, I would check it. But that's just me.

Re: GL1100 oil strainer
My 78 has over 500k miles on it. I think I had about 200k on it when I pulled the engine to paint the frame. Checked it then. All was good. I use good oil, and change it every 3000 miles. That might help

Re: GL1100 oil strainer
"At least once while you own it" seems to be the standard response. I checked mine because I had the engine out at about 30/40k miles? There was a bit of crud, but nothing major.
Can't hurt, but as said, if you're not getting a lot of weird loose bits in the oil when you change it, I wouldn't lose sleep.

Re: GL1100 oil strainer
yep to add one more reason is if you have any clutch issues. Otherwise pretty much don't worry about it.

Or if you find some bozo had used RTV all over it. Replacing the screws with button head Allens that you can use a ball driver on helps.

Re: GL1100 oil strainer
If you have a 1200 you have to split the crankcase to get the filter out! Honda did some strange things with the early Wings.

Re: GL1100 oil strainer
Oh, that's why I love Honda.
They managed some major steps forward with certain areas of their new bikes as they made them, but not without a couple major steps backward in places like that one.
At least at the time it seemed like Honda was very "If we expect you need to work on it, it'll be very easy to get to. If we DON'T think you should work on in? Impossible."

Re: GL1100 oil strainer
To be fair to Honda, almost all engines have a strainer on the oil pickup(industrial diesels, car engines etc) and youre not supposed to do anything to it!

This is why access to the strainer is a good idea!

Re: GL1100 oil strainer
Yes. I've taken a lot of oil pans off of KZ900/1000 engines to see that same thing. Seen older automobile engines, even worse to get to than a GL screen, also be plugged. Caused by various reasons. Many because of the operator/owner.Old Fogey wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 7:14 am This is why access to the strainer is a good idea!

Re: GL1100 oil strainer
I stand corrected,so if the (wet)clutch shares the same oil as the engine it can contaminate the oil and clog the strainer!Little naughty bugger(the clutch)
