Gl1000 carb not springing back 1975 Gl1000

#1

Post by nakedinterstate81 »

Good evening,
While I was riding around with the Gl1100 carb, I cleaning the original carb again for the fourth time, adjusted the float levels again, did the off idle fix soldering/drilling and did the mod to take out the springs in the throttle linkage arms.
I made sure it snaps back to idle before swapping the carbs and now that's its in, it doesn't return to idle at all.
It's not rubbing anywhere, sprayed a little WD40 ptfe on all the moving parts including the grip. Cables are in the same position, not binding.

What am i missing out here? :(

Thanks in advance.

I believe that the Randakk tech tips has a couple good photos of the spring in place properly.

By hand uninstalled the bell crank should be "Difficult" to rotate. It needs to be that strong. If it not then look at your large spring setup. If that is already the case then you cable routing or lubrication has to be the issue. Without the "snap back" to idle you can never get it right so do not go forward until it is resolved.

Thanks, I found Randakks throttle return spring post and will check against what I have.
It was pretty easy to rotate the bell crank by pushing on the rods with both hands.

Hello again,
I was getting ready to pull the carb and adjusted the slack on the throttle cables and now the bell snaps back.
Not as hard as the 1100 carb, once the filter was in it went a little slower. I guess I had too much tension on it.
But playing with the cables and the slack adjuster I was able to get a good snap.

I could see that the loop engages the spring retainer at 10 o'clock on the bell but could not see the one o'clock.
Might have to pull again.

So she fired right up, had good idle and throttle response, however I spritzed water on the headers and again
the #2 did not evaporate instantly like the others. This happened before and was the reason I cleaned again.
Brand new Randakks kit in there, did the tests like shown in his videos.
The #2 spark plug came off while installing it so I made a fresh cut.
With the 1100 carb the #2 header evaporated like the others.

I don't know what to do with this carb anymore.
Should I just ride it a while? Can it hurt the engine?

No it won't hurt anything. I would run some chemicals and a couple tanks of gas and see where it is.

Just some seafoam. Half a can per tank of gas.

Ran one hundred miles with seafoam and it runs pretty smooth.
Compared to the 1100 carb is has so much stronger acceleration, runs smoother and almost no off-idle hesitation.
Its a rocket now action1
The #2 header is still not as hot as the others. I will take a look at the plugs tomorrow and sync the carbs.

Unfortunately the bike fell over while I was in the grocery store and broke the windshield and the rear turn signal.
I googled the company who made the fairing but can't find anything.
Time to go naked?
I drove home without the shield and could barely hear the engine :(

If you decide to replace the windshield try gustafsson plastics. I could not believe it but they had a Fulmer windshield on the shelf for my 78 tour pac. https://bikescreen.com/ You can take a look but best to actually call them.
