Intermittent oil pressure light

#1

Post by Chainman »

Hello all

I seek advice.

Since I recently replaced head gaskets on my 75 wing, the oil pressure light intermittently appears dimly lit with occasional periods of brightness.

The duration is probably less than 30 seconds; still worrisome. On a 1 hour ride it may happen 3 times.
I notice the light after hard acceleration (brighter?) , but also while cruising (dimmer?)
Throttle manipulations seem to " help it go away", but that may be coincidental.

I have fresh Rottela t4 and filter.

When the light is bright, should I be stopping asap?

What can I do to correct this?

Thanks

Yea the pickup screen would probably be my first check. Any issues with the clutch? Sudden grabbing or slippage? Also check the wire going to the pressure switch to make sure it is connected securely. Bout 90% that is a ground isolation circuit.

Exellent.
Thank you, I'll clean the screen; wiring seems in order.

Are you sure that you put the flow restrictor back in? Without it, oil flow may be flooding the head and starving the bearings for pressure.

has anyone ever installed an oil pressure gauge on their wing?
I plan on doing it on my roadstar as it has a dry sump system which means more things that could fail but I never thought about one on my wing till now.

Positive.

But gee whiz, one little crumb of gasket material and my restrictor could be restricted (?) :(

Hope it's the screen. Will know tomorrow

I do not think he is saying a restrictor is the source of your problem unless the restrictor is missing. Then it would allow too much flow out to the heads and not enough to the main journals.

Just a couple pieces of pipe screwed into the oil pressure switch hole with a gauge on the end.
