carb R and R question

#1

Post by SRob »

I'm pulling the carb rack on my '83 1100. I know the tutorial says you need to remove the throttle and choke cables while the rack is in the bike. Can you pull the rack, set the carbs on something THEN disconnect the cables? And the opposite: attach the cables then re-install the rack? It's a PITA to do that with the carbs "in", just looking for an easier way. Thanks.

While I can't speak for the 1100, on the 1000 the answer is "Sort of, but not really". Unless you remove the cables from the handlebars, there's not nearly enough slack to remove the carbs from the bike completely. Now you CAN unbolt the runners from the engine before taking the cables off, which gets you a bit of wiggle room later. But that's about the most help you can get.

By far the most annoying step to removing the carb rack.

All advice I give is only valid until an expert corrects me.

Might can do part way but you are going to be tugging and possibly damage the cables. They ain't cheap and they do need to be silky smooth for proper carb operation. Uou put a kink or crush one of the sheaths even a little and it will be an issue

It's been about 4 years since I R/R a carb rack, but I remember installing the rack and then trying to route and install the cables. I guess I'll keep a set of long needle-nose and some surgical clamps handy and see if I can do a hybrid with the rack loose and before I push the rack completely out and back in. Thanks!

On my 1100, you take the tops off the right side (brake) and sneek them over about 1/3 of the way out. You can then undo the cables and not hurt them. If you take the water Passover tube and elbow out you got LOTS of room. Be careful of the bolts holding the elbow in the head.

Thanks Oldewing! I'm assuming you mean the carb caps when you say "tops"... correct?

Pretty sure you are both referring to the same thing. Pull the caps, springs and sliders and set them aside. Always try to put the parts back in the same carbs they came from.

Yes, and take the shelter side covers off to get them out of the way and avoid scratching.

The 1100's shelter lifts off as a unit after you undo the 4 M6 screws (2 are under the seat). I think the carbs can be removed with the shelter in place but I usually remove it anyway because it makes removing the airbox easier.
