stripping rear suspension

#1

Post by NiteMare »

ok i was hoping to get the upper shells of the suspension units rechromed..

i have "stripped" the one unit as per the instructions in the haynes manual, but i am now stuck and can't see how to seperate the rest of the unit, i still have the spring trapped inside and the "shell" is still attached to the "post"..

does anyone have any suggestions ??

or have i wasted my effort and will have to paint it ?? (i can get chrome paint that looks pretty good

thanks in advance

Oops edit time ...

I am pretty sure that nightmare is refering to the rear shocks. S&W used to sell a damper kit for these shock, using you own springs and top part of the shock. Dont know if they still sell them, but I seem to remember they sold a special tool complete with instructions on how to carry this out.

While a complete strip down of a rear shock may cause problems, replacing the seal and oil is not to bad :)

yea it's the rear suspension...
i took the rubber boot off, dug the corrosion out from round the circlip retaining area and unclipped the circlip, the washer/spacer fell out then i held the shock in a bucket whilst i applied air to blow the seal and a couple of other bits out .....

unfortunately that's as far as i seem to be able to get at the moment , i think i'll have to clean me glasses and have another look....

btw .. if anyone is just servicing thier shocks (replacing seal and fluid) for an 1100, it's nothing to be afraid of just be prepared for an awful lot of fluid to splash around if you're not careful...

i pressurised mine using an airline whilst i held the shock in a bucket which trapped 99% of the fluid, i didn't just blast air in at full throttle, a little air then released the pressure back off and checked to see if the seal was moving (it was) then pressured again a little, held it a couple of seconds then gave it a little more air then it was a sudden pop/gloop/splosh and everything was in the bottom of the bucket with just the need of a rag to wipe my hands down ...

anyway back to trying to figure it out before i give up and paint the buggers
it ain't broke yet .........
