torque values ?

#1

Post by Jme »

Hello Wingers!

I am in the process at the moment to replace the water pump on my 1982 GL1100 Standard. I can't seem to find the proper torque values in either the Honda or Clymer manuals. I have the new pump at 13 ft./lbs. and that feels plenty tight. Those little cover bolts I would like to tighten properly too. Any help definately appreciated!

Is this bolts M6 or M8? I think they are M6 and 12 ft/lbs is
very close. :idea:

Its the three bolts through the pump. 10mm head. I have to go back to pick up some more o rings, think I will replace the oil pump seal while I am in there, as there was a lot of crud on it.

So I will try to pick their brains ;)

Good thing its cold and wet here, or I would be getting antsy. Thanks for the reply, Try.

Wrong gasket?

#6

Post by Jme »

I put my new seals and o rings in.
The big gasket for the transmission cover is the wrong one. Almost identical, it was missing an oil passage at the top, right above the water pump. I was under the impression all the 1000 and 1100 were the same, but mine is different. They ordered it and I should get it :( sometime.

Do any of you know what the oil passage is for, looks like it runs down to the water pump.

Bandanna or Try, would the 10mm refer to the head size? It just feels like that much torque would strip it out, and a another new pump would hurt the wallet. 13 ft lbs is where I am right now.

Not the head size, the bolt itself.

Do you mean the gasket to the engine front cover?

torque values

cylinder block bolts:

6mm=7-10 lb/ft

8mm=18-21 lb/ft

10mm=24-27 lb/ft

cylinder head nuts=38-41 lb/ft

engine mounting bolts:
10mm=22-29lb/ft
12mm=40-43lb/ft

I WOULD AGREE WITH TRY ON THIS,AND WOULD SUGGEST THAT 13LB/FT WOULD BE ADEQUATE......
START UP+LET IT BUILD UP TEMP.
NO LEAKS,THEN LEAVE AT THAT!!!!

IT IS THE SIZE OF THE BOLT,NOT THE HEAD...........

It takes a while but after all these years I think my arm has a built in torque wrench :lol:

sometimes found you do things to the supposedly right torque and you end up stripping threads :(

That would be gasket number 4 on the picture. The gasket I received was missing the little hole right at the top. Thanks for the torque tips, I don't know my metrics very well, I spend all week with the inch system. :-?

Went ahead and checked the thermostat, and am in the middle of changing the timing belts too. I was going to just replace the thermostat with the NAPA one, but it looked like the Honda unit would flow much more water through it.

So I just boiled some water in the microwave and dipped it in, it worked fine.

The Napa belts look to be about 1 mm narrower than Hondas, but other than that look identical.

I got the radiator back from a rad shop, looks good now, had a leak at the filler neck.

Cold and possibly snowy next week, so I am still calm :)
