GL 1100 valve sizes

Right who's gonna give me a list on valve head sizes and what years/models the different sizes apply to.

I'm going to be rebuilding an engine soon....and need some heads.

CYLINDER HEAD+VALVES: DISMANTLING.EXAMINATION,RENOVATION....

BEFORE EXAMINATION AND RENOVATION OF THE CYLINDER HEADS CAN BE CARRIED OUT,THE CAMSHAFTS MUST BE REMOVED,AND THE CONTACT BREAKER ASSEMBLY DETATCHED AS FOLLOWS:
THECONTACT BREAKER HOUSING IS FITTED TO THE REAR OF THE LEFT HAND CYLINDER HEAD.REMOVE THE TWO SCREWS THAT RETAIN THE HOUSING,AND FREE THE LOW TENSION CABLE FROM THE WIRING CLIP.THE HOUSING,COMPLETE WITH CONTACT BREAKERS,WILL PULL OFF THE SHAFT.
LOOSEN+UNSCREW THE A.T.U.(automatic timing unit)BOLT FROM THE END OF THE CAMSHAFT,AND DRAW THE A.T.U. AWAY. PUSH THE RADIAL DRIVE PIN FROM POSITION IN THE SHAFT......
THE CAMSHAFTS CAN NOW BE REMOVED,USING THE SAME PROCEDURE FOR EACH.
REMOVE THE SIX(6) BOLTS WHICH RETAIN THE ROCKER ARM/SPINDLE SUPPORT,AND LIFT THE SUPPORT FROM POSITION.(thesupport is located on 2 hollow dowells which should be removed to avoid loss)
REMOVAL OF THE SUPPORT WILL FREE THE CAMSHAFT,WHICH CAN BE LIFTED OUT OF THE HALF BEARINGS,TOGETHER WITH OIL SEALS.
REMOVE THE CARBON FROM THE COMBUSTION CHAMBERS BEFORE REMOVING THE VALVES.(use a blunt scraper,which will not damage the surface+finish with metal polish)

A VALVE SPRING COMPRESSOR IS REQUIRED TO REMOVE THE VALVES.
COMPRESS THE SPRINGS+REMOVE THE COLLETS.
RELAX THE SPRINGS+REMOVE THE VALVE SPRING COLLAR,VALVE SPRING,VALVE SPRING SEATS+VALVE.KEEP THESE COMPONENTS TOGETHER IN A SET,AS EACH VALVE MUST BE REPLACED IN ITS ORIGINAL LOCATION
CLEAN THE CARBON FROM THE INLET+EXHAUST PORTS+FROM THE VALVE HEAD....

BEFORE ATTENDING TO THE VALVE SEATS,CHECK THE VALVE GUIDE+STEM WEAR.
VALVE CLEARANCE MAY BE DETERMINED BY SUBTRACTING THE VALVE STEM DIAMETER FROM THE INTERNAL DIAMETER OF THE GUIDE.............

INLET VALVE(outside diameter) 0.2591-0.2595in(6.58-6.59mm)
EXHAUST VALVE(outside diameter)0.2579-0.2583in(6.55-6.56mm)
VALVE GUIDE INTERNAL DIAMETER 0.2598-0.2606in(6.60-6.62mm)
WEAR LIMIT.......... 0.2614in(6.64mm)
INLET GUIDE VALVE CLEARANCE..0.0004-0.0016in(0.01-0.04mm)
WEAR LIMIT.......0.0032in(0.08mm)
EXHAUST GUIDE VALVE CLEARANCE..0.0020-0.0028in(0.05-0.07mm)
WEAR LIMIT........... 0.0039in(0.1mm)


IF A VALVE OR GUIDE EXCEEDS THE STATED WEAR LIMIT,IT MUST BE RENEWED.........
IF THE VALVE/GUIDE CLEARANCE IS EXCESSIVE,BUT THE VALVE STEM IS STILL WITHIN THE LIMITS+IN GOOD CONDITION,THE GUIDE ALONE MAY BE RENEWED..
THE GUIDES MAY BE DRIFTED FROM POSITION USING A DOUBLE DIAMETER DRIFT OF THE CORRECT DIAMETER AFTER THE CYLINDER HEAD HAS BEEN HEATED TO 80-100 degrees CELSIUS............

*NB* I WOULD ADVISE HEATING THE HEAD IN AN OVEN, AS TO GIVE AN EVEN TEMPERATURE ACROSS THE WHOLE CYLINDER HEAD, AS OPPOSED TO HEATING WITH A TORCH,WHICH IS ONE SIDED,AND MAY CAUSE WARPAGE..................................

REPLACE THE NEW GUIDES USING THE SAME DRIFT+WITH THE CYLINDER AT THE SAME TEMPERATURE.
A NEW GUIDE WILL REQUIRE REAMING IN ORDER TOBRING THE VALVE/GUIDE CLEARANCE WITHIN THE SPECIFIED TOLERANCES.
IT IS ALSO LIKELY THAT THE VALVE SEAT WILL REQUIRE CUTTING IN ORDER THAT THEVALVE SEAT/GUIDE ALIGNMENT IS EXACT...........

ALSO CHECK THAT THE VALVE STEM IS NOT BENT,ESPECIALLY IF THE ENGINE HAS BEEN OVER-REVVED. IF BENT,THE VALVE MUST BE RENEWED...........
THE VALVES MUST BE GROUND TO PROVIDE A GAS-TIGHT SEAL,DURING NORMAL OVERHAUL,OR AFTER RE-CUTTING THE SEAT OR RENEWING THE VALVE...........

VALVE GRINDING IS SIMPLE,BUT LABORIOUS!!!!!!!!!
SMEAR GRINDING PASTE ON THE VALVE SEAT,ATTACH A SUCTION TOOL ON VALVE FACE.
OIL THE STEM.ROTATE THE VALVE IN BOTH DIRECTIONS,LIFTING UP OCCASIONALLY,AND TURNING THROUGH 90degrees
START WITH COARSE PASTE IF BADLY PITTED+CONTINUE WITH FINE PASTE UNTIL THERE IS AN UNBROKEN MATT GREY RING ON EACH SEAT+VALVE.
AFTER MANY REGRINDS,THE VALVE SEAT MAY BECOME POCKETED,WHEN IT SHOULD BE RE-CUT.
WIPE OFF VERY CAREFULLY,ALL TRACES OF PASTE.(if left in engine,will cause very rapid wear!!!)
VALVE SEALING MAY BE CHECKED,BY INSTALLING THE VALVE+SPRING,AND POURING PARAFFIN DOWN THE PORT....
CHECK NONE LEAKS PAST THE VALVE SEAT...

CHECK THE VALVE COLLETS SEAT WELL IN THEIR GROOVES.ALSO CHECK THE VALVE SPRING COLLAR. RENEW ANY DEFECTIVE PART........

CHECK THE FREE LENGTH OF THE VALVE SPRINGS.RENEW WHEN BELOW THE SERVICE LIMIT,OR COMPARE WITH YOUR NEW ONES...
FIT NEW OIL SEALS TO EACH VALVE GUIDE,AFTER CHECKING THE VALVE SPRING SEATS ARE IN PLACE.OIL THE VALVE STEM+REPLACE THE VALVE.
FIT BOTH VALVE SPRINGS WITH CLOSE COILS NEXT TO THE CYLINDER HEAD,FOLLOWED BY THE VALVE SPRING COLLAR
COMPRESS THE SPRING,AND RE-FIT THE VALVE COLLETS.
RELAX THE SPRINGS,ENSURING THE COLLETS STAY IN POSITION
SEAT THE COLLETS FIRMLY WITH A FEW BLOWS SQUARELY ON THE VALVE STEM WITH A SOFT HAMMER
**********DO NOT DO THE ABOVE ACTION WITH THE CYLINDER HEAD RESTING FLAT ON THE WORKBENCH************************

CHECK THE CYLINDER HEAD FOR WARPAGE, USING A SURFACE PLATE,ORPLATE GLASS........
IF WARPAGE EXCEEDS SERVICEABLE LIMIT,IT WILL HAVE TO BE SKIMMED,OR RENEWED.....
CYLINDER HEAD WARPAGE..........0.0032in (0.08mm)
MAXIMUM WARPAGE............ 0.0039in (0.1mm)
CYLINDER BLOCK/HEAD SURFACE WARPAGE IS USUALLY DUE TO UNEVEN TIGHTENING OF THE CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS............... tumb2

FOR ALL 998cc GL1000 WINGS 1975-1979.

:shock: thanks bandana but thats not the answer i,m looking for ;)

there are 1100 models with different size valves and I wanted to know the years....I have just been told 80-82 had the larger valves 83-84 had the smaller fitted.... can anyone confirm this please.

Blimey :shock: didn't know there were three different sizes for the exhaust valves....

so in theory if I put the 82 int/Asp heads on an 80 model this should improve the Bhp....more fuel to chamber by bigger inlets and allowing more exhaust gas flow through exhaust valves.

with a bit of jetting up on the carbs......this sound right :?:
