dyna ignition timing problem

#1

Post by grouchy »

I bought a dyna electronic ignition and I'm having a problem.
I connect a test light to the blue wire and rotate the mounting plate so that the light comes on at the F2 mark.
Then I move the test light to yellow, rotate the engine to the F1 mark, but I can't move the right hand (1-2) module far enough ccw to get the light on.

I loosen the screws that hold the 1-2 module and move it, it hits the 3-4 module before the light comes on.

Once I set the 3-4 timing at the f2 mark, I can't set the 1-2 timing because there isn't enough adjustment.

I have cut 1/8" off the module with a small cutoff wheel and it still won't move far enough.

Does anyone have any ideas?

On the back of the dyna plate there is an adjustment screw. Loosen it and move the left module all the way to the left/down. That gave me enough wiggle room to adjust the right module. If not, take a rat tail file or dremel tool and elongate the slot on the plate. That should give you enough clearance to adjust both modules. Let us know.
Hope for the best, expect the worst and take what comes!

I think they went with Gl18 swing arm fit strength and length.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I think I found my problem, the wires to the two modules were bunched up where the cable clamp is, and one of the wires had chafed insulation through to the rotating ignition "cam" which has metal in the right spot to affect the operation of the right module.

It all works now, but it was really tough shortening the swingarm

You are not the first to have this problem. We could almost use a sticky to remind people to check this if they have the Dyna ignition. (just kidding of course) But it does happen more often than it should.
