77 gl1000 - water pump leak

#1

Post by kenai »

Hi all - replaced water and housing with another pump that was tight- no wobble. the old one was really a wiggler. new pump is leaking very consistently..... any ideas what could be wrong before I rebuild the pump? ...thxs kenai

it is leaking water (distilled -as new head gaskets being broke in); pump is not wobbly so i'll chase a pinched oring/gasket. pulling it out the second time should not be so bad; 1/4 drive impact wrench plus all the fittings are anti-seized

Yes, it's a bad pump, replace it. Don't rebuilt it. It's not worth the effort or the cost savings.

Good call by RB. Either way, you get to pull the pump out again.

until you pull it and look, you cannot tell if it is the O-ring.... here is the thing, however, if you pull it replace the O-ring and it still leaks you will have to pull it again.

what I am not sure from your orginal question is whether the pump you put in is new or used

Sounds like a used pump to me.... Kenai, your going to have to take it apart again to replace that O ring and, maybe again if it's a bad pump. Do yourself a favor and simply put in a new pump. Use parts in this situation are not the way to go. Just too much work.
