Clean plastic carb tops?
Should the plastic white carb tops be left alone, or is there a way to touch them up/clean them?

In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird.
Now the world is Weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

Re: Clean plastic carb tops?
My plastic tops are fine, just a little faded. I don't need for them to be replaced. I was just wondering if there was a reason why they are left alone and aren't painted when they fade in their white color?

No reason why they can't be painted as long as the paint sticks and doesn't damage the button.
They are made out of a nylon type material.

Re: Clean plastic carb tops?
Thanks for the plug Claude. As of now I will not be selling individual buttons for home repair. Depending on further testing on the Lynx's carbs with favorable results, that might change .But as of now I personally will make the repairs when I am ready to offer the service.kYpondman wrote:Here's some replacement buttons.

Having polished few original tops along with the Black ones I produce I can say with certainty the discoloration of the original buttons is not surface deep.
Yes you can polish them till they glow but with some the buffing wheel will not be able to get the brownish patina out of them. Think of them as a 30+ year old plastic similar to 30+ year old Ivory or sun bleached deer antler with many microscopic cracks and crevices as one of the reason for the color changes.
Personally speaking, if I was bent on bringing the color back close to the original I would find a way to soak them in bleach prior to using a polisher/buffer wheel on them.. But then again, I’m not. I like looking at the patina on 30+ year old bikes. Be it a chip on my swing arm or sun cracks in my speedometers ’s face .

I used 1 3/8 freeze plugs fastened with silicone on the carb tops after coating twice with clear acrylic enamel. Mine were especially ugly prior to that. Greg saw at least 2 of 'em and would likely attest to that.
