GL 1000 Charging system

#1

Post by roscoepc »

My first question is for those of you that have experience with the GL1000 charging system. What, if any, are the weak points of the charging system on this Beast? The reason I ask is I presently own an '85 GL1200 Ltd Ed and have found out the hard way about all the weak points in that system, what not to do and so forth..

I'm seriously leaning toward buying a '75 GL1000 I've found. The bike appears to be stock except for a rear fender rack and a windshield so there's no electrical add-ons that I can see and there won't be any added if I buy her!! And I'll most likely take off the rack and the windshield as I want her as bone stock as is possible and besides.... If I want to ride a GW with a windshield, I've allways got that Ltd Ed!!!

If anyone knows anything else to look for as far as weak points on this model please let me know!

Also, a note to the Admin's/Moderator's... My apologies. I was gonna post this in the General Motorcycle Forum but I couldn't find the New Topic button.

the only point that might be considered weak would be the connection from the stator to the harness. if it gets dirty or corroded it over heats and can short out the stator. removing the connector and hard wiring the wires is the solution. and maybe the 7v regulator on some years

Thanks! That's one of the same problems with the GL1200 only, when the stator wires are hardwired/soldered, the problem is then transfered to the regulator connector and what I did with mine was to hardwire all the connector wires there also....

I have only seen one where the problem went down the line to the rectifier connector on the 1000 so it can happen but is rare.

a key to a good electrical system is to keep ALL the connectors clean and dry, and resistance free
