Gas cap venting...

#1

Post by Pooch »

I just installed my carbs after a rebuild. Tan full. the fuel flows with the cap off. When I put the cap on it stops. Is this normal? Does it take the pump pulling the fuel to get the cap to vent properly?

It should not be stopping the flow. These caps are designed to allow air in but not out so the tank does not create a vacuum and starve the carbs. Some have had luck with cleaning the cap and I think some have replaced them. I drill a small hole in it so it vents both ways. Some people think that is unsafe and advise against it so use your own judgement.

Thanks Whiskerfish,I soaked it in some bathroom cleaner (Phosphoric acid), cleaned up nice, but still doesn't work. I'll soak it overnight and see if it helps before I move on to plan "B".

I had to drill mine. Works fine. I should probably just get a new one though.
1976 sorta stock GL 1000. 1997 VZ800 definitely not stock Suzuki Marauder. Ride em like you stole em!
