In the process of changing out the timing belts on a 77 that sat in the weather for 10+ years (got it running now, btw!) after removing the belt covers, the front of the engine case and the "cylinder head covers" according to Honda are really oxidized. Also, the plates behind the tensioners, #s 3 & 4 on http://www.westernhonda.com/fiche_secti ... veh=131059 are really rusty.
I pulled the covers off an 80 1100, that has a frozen motor, to check the condition of those plates. It had none. I figured PO or his mechanic didn't reinstall them after a tensioner change. Checking the schematic for the 1100, it doesn't use them. All the other part #s are the same, so my question is are these even needed on the 1000 and if so, why?
As far as the oxidization on the rest of the aluminum, I'm just planning on pulling the cam pulleys and tensioners and using a wire wheel to clean it up some. Any thoughts on this?

I didn't remember seeing those plated on my '78 when I recently did the timing belts on the '77, about 5 years apart. I also wondered if it would make any difference at all if they were installed or not but I always tend to figure if those that engineered such things they did it for a reason. However, I have no idea what their reasoning was or what purpose they have.

Pretty sure those are just heat shields to protect the belts from the heat generated in the heads?? I do not see a reason beyond that why they would exist??

I just cleaned them up and painted them with engine paint.

All cleaned up and repainted. Planning on putting everything back in in the morning. I wire wheeled most of the corrosion off the aluminum, too. Ended up chucking a 12ga bronze bore brush in the drill for the hard to get to spots. It worked really well. As far as the heat shields, I wonder why the 1000s had them and the 1100s didn't. Over engineering on the earlier bikes or changes to the later that made them unnecessary?
