WOW!!!
OK then and thanks for the interest.
Let me get a few things together and take some pics and we will start.
I will refresh this post when I get something to show.
Started working on it today and more than likely Monday evening I will have the first installment.

I've avoided opening my '77 speedometer because I wasn't thrilled with either of the processes that I knew about so I'm very much looking forward to your methods.

Here we go:
What I will offer is a good way to open the gauges with the idea that the owner can do so and do it well.
Here are the tools that you will need to buy as well as a 13" long piece of #12 stranded copper wire.
The screwdrivers are 3/16" flat blade type. Husky brand or better as long as they are normally heat treated.

The clamp to buy is a helical gear clamp shown below.
It has a butterfly tightener which will come in handy.
All available from Home Depot.

Shown here is the grinding required for the two screwdrivers. The opening tool is the easier one to grind and the start tool has a few pics for you to look at. Let me know if you have questions.

You must first remove the hardware and wire light harness from the gauge as shown below.
If you are opening a 78-79 speedo or a 75-77 Tachometer the harness(es) that run inside of the gauge must be un-crimped and the seals (if used on the wires) should be carefully pushed inside the gauge just a little.

Ok, I'll go...
Do you use a wet grinder or just let the screwdriver air cool after just a little grinding, then grind some more?
Won't take much to get the tips hot and lose their harness.
Great to keep these old 'Wings flying on down the road.

Wog,

Of course a wet quenching vessel is best but if the progress is slow, it should be OK.

RB,
It can be moved later but for the moment, I feel that interested members will judge it for its worth here.

The wire now can be wrapped around the black bezel as close to the crimp ring as you can place it.
A piece of tape will hold it and the ends should be beneath the trip boot.
Place the clamp onto the ring/wire so that it is above the surface of the ring (on the bottom cover) 1/32 to 1/16" but no more and the clamp joint is close to being beneath the trip boot.
Snug it and check that the height is the same all around.
The final position checked the clamp can be tightened aggressively until the clamp is secure but only by hand.
Turn the gauge over and check to see that the wire has not slipped away from the clamp.

I designed it this way so that the wire coating will hold the clamp square with the gauge and keep the clamp from slipping.

At this point loosen the screws on the bottom of the gauge but do not remove them.

Now that you are satisfied that all is correct, turn the gauge with the bottom facing up.
As you see in the first picture I have already started to un-crimp the ring,
This is a little tricky but if you press hard on the sharpened start tool and place the sharp triangular end up to the ring, you can twist the handle gently but with very firm down pressure until you get under it.
This is where you will have the most difficulty so be careful.
You will not need to open the gap very much on the first attempt but move forward 1/16" and do it once more.
Repeat until you have it un-crimped about 3/16". You will notice that the step in the tool will allow the opened crimp to unfold into it.

Now place the opening tool into the wide area previously un-crimped and twist and hold down firmly until the crimp ring band is nearly vertical to the clamp.
Don't work to hard to get it perfect but enough until you can see the edge of the lower gauge.
Do this slowly so the tool does not snap over the crimp.
This process will take a little while but when you are finished there should be very few divots in the ring.
You should work to keep these to a minimum and whatever you do avoid tearing the opened crimp ring flange.
