Count me in the list, I'd be extremely interested in how it's done, and if it can be done without looking like a train wreck. :8)

I didn't clean them up, on mine they were beyond repair. New ones don't exist any more, so I looked around and as I had white faces I went for some VDO gauges, they are in white and look old fashioned, I think they are called Cockpit Royale. The faces are whit and the they are 12 volt so the 7 volt thing is only used for the main clocks.

You can view and get the clocks here ---> http://www.vdo-gauges.com/instruments-d ... oyale.html

For the trip boot, I wonder if a wheel valve stem would work. You'd have to remove the valve core, or pull the rubber from the brass tube. But the diameter looks about right, and you can get a free or cheap used one at any tire store.

Mine is dry rotted, so I might give it a go.

Interesting idea. I think just about everyone I have ever seen has dry rot issues.

That's what I did on the one of the rebuilds.
The tire stem fits but does not have the slight offset of the original making bind a bit on the shaft.
Still acceptable.

My other option is to simply put some heat shrink over the existing rotted boot. The dry rot will still be there, but it will look prettier. I could even do a couple layers to beef it up a bit.

Did that on the first one I repaired.
Worked well and still in operation.

Been messing with gauges using Pete's method. I'm terrible at removing the ring but I must say the #12 copper wire caper is brilliant. I think I found a better way to reassemble though. I got this from a Youtube video. The wood jig takes the clamping strain off the lens piece. The ring is tapped down using a hardwood dowel, tapping done in increments. The part of the ring that you see when the gauge is on the bike remains unmolested.
I made this jig from 3/4" plywood and glued on 3/4" plywood feet. If you're inclined to make one, I would add a 5th foot under the saw kerf. The thing flexes there. I glued on a strip of hardwood but a foot would be better.
I'd like to say my project was successful but I managed to bugger it up in so many other ways.......
The ring jig is good though and I think it's an improvement over Pete's original reassembly method.
Sorry one of the pics is rotated. Even though 35 years a programmer, I purposely forgot all tech mumbo-jumbo when I escaped Boeing.

I rescued a '79 CB750F last winter that had been outdoors since at least 1999. Both the speedo and tach needed opening, lubrication of the needle pivot (I use silicone spray lube - very thin and lasts a long time). But, before opening the speedo I took the bike for its first test ride and returned with the speedo needle shattered (I swear I didn't ride that fast)! This was to be a rat bike that performed well but looks did not mater, so I replaced the broken needle with a strip cut from a 90 degree angle along a piece of clam shell packaging. I put some fluorescent orange paint on the inside of the angle, then glued it to the remaining center of the original needle. Worked great!

I thought I would add another "you tube" video to your link. I found this video and it show a lot of the same suggestions as Pete did in his tutorial in this conversation.

As for a boot around the trip knob, as someone else mentioned, a tire valve-stem with the metal removed works well.
I am trying to follow this great idea, but I’m struggling to get the rubber off the brass core. Can someone enlighten me please?

Thanks
