Timing belt tensioner questions

#1

Post by Toehead »

Gents,

I rebuilt a set of timing belt tensioners (welded stud and gates idler) for my 77.

I have a quick question: These rebuilt tensioners will interfere with the heat sheilds and also the little backing plate that is used on the 77. I see on the 1100 they removed both of these parts. Am I ok to just leave these off?

Thanks,

My guess would be that the engineers were trying to keep the temperature down
A little on the bearings and belts with heat shield and the metals strips protect aluminum alloy
From bolt pressure and protect while sliding around. Plus the strips match shield width.
I think whatever it takes to get proper alignment and clearances of pulley and belt
Is the big thing. I wonder how much cooler the pulleys run with and without,
Heat shields, not much I bet. If my pulleys were bad and I liked felt very comfortable
With the new ones. I'd run em without shields and strips. Or you could go without
Covers. I think the old porsche 924 s motor didn't have timming covers. I like looking
At the sprokets spinning.
Maybe I'll fashion some made out of a screen material for rock protection. Mmmm
Since mine are off now.

Cool ,

Thanks for the confirmation. I'll probably cut the "strip" in the middle for clearance, and run without heat shields.

Hello,

Just now getting into rebuilding tensioners on a '76. Has it been determined that the backing plate is unnecessary? It looks as if all rebuild methods (with the exception of grinding the "stud" head flush) will interfere with the backing plate. I was wanting to use a 10mm socket (hex) flat head bolt.

Thanks,

I used the wheel stud option on my 78, I cut the stud off and drilled to size. It worked well.

Thanks,
From what I am told the factory left them off of the 1100 builds so I think it is safe to run without.

I have a small lathe, so was able to cut down and taper the head of a bolt to fit.
