neutral switch not coming on after replacing water pump

I did a search but so far haven't come up with the answer. so my apologies if its in here somewhere.

Have the heads off and replaced the water pump. oriented the neutral switch just as shown in the how to in the shop talk section. put the front cover back on and assumed with the bike in neutral the light should come on. I didn't want to have it all together and find out it wasn't working. I don't recall for sure when I took it apart if it was working but i think it was?? so turned on the key but the neutral light doesn't come on. If it's installed right it should? The bike is a 1983 Interstate.

If its installed incorrectly it will come on in 4th gear. You did hook up the neutral switch wiring to the harness, right?

I didn't disconnect from the harness when I took it apart. Rechecked this morning and it's connected to the harness and was not loose. sounds like I need to take the front cover off and recheck what I did inside.

oops, comes on in 2nd gear. I'm just a little off? switch had moved on me during reassembly. now works the way it's supposed to.
