Carb sync

#1

Post by jimidean »

Greeting folks. New hear, finally getting some time to put into a gl1100 project. Thanks in advance for your help.

Im having some trouble syncing the carbs.

Have one of those motion pro fuild type manometers. The problem is I'm not getting any reading with it.

The bike runs. Has about 60k miles. Full 170lb compression in each cylinder. But nothing on the meter. Thought maybe the meter broke but I also have a cb550 and a ducati 900 and the meter works fine on both of them.

Should I expect a lower vacuum pull on these bikes or am I missing something obvious?

You should get some reading. Might be something obvious. The ports might be blocked but that does not sound right, not all of them. Where are you connecting the manometer?

Thanks for the response Todd. The are connected on the 90 degree carb boot. They look aftermarket, cheep chrome plating. I'll take a look.

Could be the ports are blocked on the aftermarket intake manifolds. If it running there HAS to be some vacuum inside the manifolds. Could just require a small drill to make the hole?

Seems like one of the carbs should get a reading, even a little , are you sure there is no caps/plugs in the lines of the new sync guages, especially if they were shipped with fluid inside.

The very first thing I did with the motion pro was suck all the fluid out of one of the chambers. I removed the hoses and replaced the ones on my mercury sticks with them. I'm not saying there's something wrong with 'em though. I lack patience and shoulda read the directions first but no way I was gonna buy more of that overpriced fluid since I had still had my old sticks.

Thanks guys. Got it to work this morning.

What i did was balance the meter on another bike over halfway up the meter. Then when i put in on the gl it would register above the plastic so it was readable.

Now onto the real issues...

Managed to get the "knock" out under idle but its still there under load in low gear. Still a unbalanced mixture issue?

As for a knock at idle I guess you're refering to the primary chain clatter? I'd be looking for something else above idle, maybe a timing too advanced issue creating some valve clatter?
