OK got it running and it certainly seems better. It takes the revs nice and then the revs drop nicely as well. Problem now is it doesn't want to idle and it seems the idle screw isn't doing anything. As Pete said to set it at three full turns and I niow have it about five turns in and it still won't idle. I have not touched the. Sync screws yet as I want to make sure I do not lose their current settings. I am thinking I need to open the butterflies a tiny bit on one, two and four Carb? Your thoughts?

Thanks

To all,

Just a side note:
This procedure may take a time or two to "feel" that the positions are all closed.
Generally this will get the carbs fairly close from 78 thru 83.
75 thru 77 may not be as easy to do because they are a little more finicky.

kgdb,
Try a little more on the idle screw to see if it will idle.

Well no such luck redid the process and it doesn't want to idle. Have the idle screw in about eight turns?

Also I have the pilot screws set at 1 3/4 turns out.

kgdb,

Your engine should be screaming at eight turns.
Is this in fact the case?

Well one would sure think so but it just won't idle. Throttle response is real good at 2500 and up but no good and sluggish below that?

kgdb,

It would seem then that something else is amiss.
Where is it "idling" now? (rpm)

It sounds like the primary jets are stopped up. (The ones that are pressed in.)

kgdb,

These jets are a real bugger to clean.
They were replaced later in the model with removable ones.
The jet has openings for air as well as fuel.
It also has an opening at its very bottom (actually top when viewed with the carb upright) for both to get to the transfer ports. It is this opening that may still be clogged.

OK, I am going to pull the carbs and see what I can do. Is there anyway to get them out?

I have a old set of carbs here, I will see if I can figure a way to get them out

kgdb,

They are not removable

Please don't try that.
A good (non rubber damaging) carb cleaner can help.
Turn the carb set over and fill that tower opening.
The cleaner should drain thru if the passages are open.

getting them out in one replaceable step is best left to the professionals. sonic cleaner, carb cleaner, and compressed air is the easier. just like the man said
