Dyna ignition

I know Dyna ignition comes up frequently but for winter work this year I am going to install electronic ignition on the 76. I can hardly see the points anymore with my eyesight.

I see on various sites two kinds of kits - one that appears to have coils and one that doesn't.

And of course there is a price difference between the two.

What should be used? I only want to do this job once and don't want any hassles going forward - in other words I don't mind spending money for the kit with coils if that is the best way to go.

You can install the DynaS ignition with stock coils. That kit comes with a replacement ballast resistor that you install in place of the stock resistor. The Dyna ignition eliminates having to maintain the points.

The second part is the coils. On a 1000, they are a performance upgrade since their output voltage is much higher than the stock coils, and you can go with a wider spark plug gap. In a place where explosions take place very rapidly, that is a decent boost. When running a Dyna ignition and Dyna coils, the ballast resistor is eliminated that the connectors just get jumpered together.

Z1 Enterprises carries the DynaS, Dyna coils, and Dyna wires as separate stock items so you can pick and choose. New NGK spark plug booties would be a good idea as well. Dyna suggests resistor plug boots and the NGK ones do have resistors. Z1 used to have the best pricing as well. I'm not sure about the current pricing situation.

The 1100 coils have a higher output than the 1000 coils so the difference probably isn't as noticeable.

Still worth changing over though to get rid of 30 year old parts. ;)

What Greg said. 100%. And, I want emphasize his comment to change the resistor plug caps with NGK's or genuine Honda. Having that brand new ignition and hotter spark slowed down by old caps is, well, 'pointless'.

When I was working on my build, I thought I'd pull the resistors out of my old plug caps just to take a look. Good thing. #4 had turned into sand and #1 was well on its way.

There had been some talk here about being able to eliminate the resistor plug boots. Dyna tech support told me to go with resistors.

I run Taylor plug wires on my KZ's with Dyna ignition. The GL has automotive wires. Both without resistor caps.

i also run the dyna without resistor caps, and no problems

Yeah, I don't see why you would spend the money to get a good hot spark and then turn that spark down with a resistor.

that was my thinking as well. and the molded plug ends are much more water proof

You can get away with that cuz you guys don't have stereos on your bikes.
