Frame rust

#1

Post by Newby »

Im concerned about where to check for issues on my '83. When and where does it become a safety issue? I have some that I touched up with paint, now I see other areas behind the covers. Not sure Im ready for a frame off job....

Typically the places it shows are the crossover tube that supports the center stand and the frame rail that supports the side stand.

This may shed some light http://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 871#p98871

Tapping on the frame listen to a dull return that's not good..tap up top and compare to lower places, corners and removalable section...

I had a nice golfball sized rust hole in the gusset on the kickstand side, near the swing arm pivot. Seems common if left on the kickstand a lot since the water will drain to that side.

You can go poking around the lower frame area, noted above, with a small ice-pick or awl. I try and remove the paint around any suspect regions, looking for the actual areas that show surface rust, then I do a bit of moderate poking with the awl, to try and see if I can break trough the steel tubing, which is bad. If the rust is just surface rust I treat and paint.
